I do alot of electro and minimal
In this style its really normal to sidechain almost everything to get all the sounds being pushed forward by the kick
Great pumping sound you can create with sidechaining can do really crazy basslines without having to worry about the kick clashing on the same freq's
But you can do countless variations, for instance sidechaining a pad sound to some chords. Or you uplifters and downlifters to a silent kick with an unusuas pattern(not 4/4)

playing with the bass velocity as someone said before can be nice and give more dynamic to the rhythm but its not always the desired effect, with this technique you can just forget about kick and bass overlapping, you just flow and write whatever you want, whenever you want .
