I like to bring up this topic now and then to see what answers people come up with.
Next time you yawn while listening to trance in your headphones, notice the bpm increases a little. Anyone have any reasons for that?
and you can't do a fake yawn, needs to be real.
(best real answer and best joke answer wins)

Another thing I've noticed is with certain songs, if I hold the headphones an inch from my ear or listen to them on speakers they sound fine.
But if I put the headphones on all the way the bassline sounds a half-step sharp ??? it makes those songs hard to listen to, I think it doesn't happen as much if I turn it down. |

If you dont touch the pitch control the BPM is the same.

this BPM effect happens to all the djs who sleep on their work, its a sort of instant punishment for lack of motivation..
seriously, I never yawned behind the mix table but anyways BPM shift effect shouldnt happen, only thing that can happen is instant tunrning of volume down while yawning.. maybe cause of the structure of your skull and yaw u get also that pitch shift effect, however I havent heard of such thing till now..

Good answers folks, but I think I know what causes it.
But first I want to say, though this is the DJ section I am not yawning while listening on headphones at the decks, I'm yawning while listening to headphones at my desk. At work.
Ok, now that we got that out of the way, here's what I think. When you yawn, you're stretching and contorting and actually decreasing the space of the inner ear (need technical help for correct words here). This smaller space is compressing the sound waves, bringing the bpms closer together which sounds in our mind like faster bpm.
What do you think?

so the DJ needs to speed things up when he/she yawns.
Ride that pitch control
What about when a member of the crowd yawns? |

That is because the sound has now space to travel and it gives you the feeling of space, hence the increased quality of sound. Research "open-back headphones"

When you yawn, the muscles around your ear canal move,, changing its shape and thus the trajectories of the sound waves within ever so slightly.
