Zoopy, for a 8" i wouldn't think of getting a sub mate.

Can't tell anything about this particular model though.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

we got hs80s here, and we find them to be very good, just like the ns10 but cleaner. they are good if you got the know how. but some people not like the ns1 but some do, its just down to preference.

We use the NS10 model in a number of our studio's at university. They are great for reference. They were industry standard back in the day, but stopped making them because Yamaha said they couldnt make the paper driver cone shape anymore(which i find very hard to believe), but if you can get a mix sounding good on them, they will sound good on almost any other speaker.
I have got a set of HS50's for reference in my home studio. They are good reference speakers.
If you want something to blow you mind and you got a bit of cash to spend, go with GENELEC.
We use Genelec for 5.1 surround mixing in our 5.1 studio at university. WOW.

Yamaha eventually discontinued the NS-10 due to the lack of availability of the wood pulp used in the woofer

it was from rainforest or something that the earth need more then for great sound...           www.sattelbattle.com

Hey im new in the monitor business and i also want to buy HS50 but after reading this thread im not sure.
Can anyone axplain what does it mean "reference speakers"? does it mean that its not good for music producing ?
And if its not good 4 producing what do you suggest in the same budget?

In my opinion, "reference" means absolutely nothing. It's another marketing BS. Almost all cheap to mid-priced studio monitors have the "reference" magic word on their product description.

I say that the HS Yamaha line is very good for its price. It has received many and very positive reviews from actual users, magazines reviews don't really count.

The true distinction between monitors and their quality comes with the words "high end" reference, but then the price would start from around 3000 euros/pair.

No matter what, in all cases personal preference and listening is the major deciding factor. The only difference with very expensive monitors is that whatever the choice is, it's going to be excellent sounding.           A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

I have the HS50 and im very happy. I think many people buy too big monitors for their rooms, so the HS50 is suitable for most. Lotsa value for money!
