Yup, this is the main reason to bounce the bassline but we can do more, add filters, compressors , eqs more and more.

Be creative

Great video and great explanation, didn't know the thing about the last note very cool.
Do you bounce each note? I work in cubase the sampling is not as easy as Ableton.           Tudo que é melhor e mais superior em mim saúda tudo que é melhor e mais alto em si

That's very tidy of you...I must say I don't have the patience to get into that sort of thing. I just record a bassline in and if it sounds good, its good.

But you got me thinking about headroom and little bassline tails, even if I side chain my bassline to the kick to eliminate this problem. I shall investigate and even if it gives me 0.3dB extra, I shall make a habit of it my self.

One extra reason (that for me is the main reason I record choose the best notes from basslines) are free running oscillator synths. Understandable this video is about the way you work though.

I havent had much succes with sidechain, it didnt eliminate the tail fully, because i had to use pretty extreme settings and then the start of the first note of the bassline suffers but it could be the compressor i was using (default ableton com) wasnt able to do the job properly.

Right, ok I do it because I want the tail of the kick to decide how loud the first note of the bassline (2nd beat) will sound. Almost always that first bassline note has a lower velocity setting that modulates cut-off and sometimes amplitude as well.

I am not familiar with Ableton's compressor, but Logic's platinum compressor was giving me the most transparent results when doing this, although Logic's FET compressor just made things slightly more pumping for the same gain reduction (about 4dB) and used the fastest attack on the sidechain compressor to have an as instant gain drop of the bassline on the kick trigger, as possible. Still I was doing everything by ear and liked the natural flow of decaying tails apparent in the mix and thus I was using Logic's midi gate to have the notes slightly shorter than a full 16th (88% was my usual setting) to give some space between notes and kick, and get that maschine gun sub woofer action in the lows, without really paying attention at the master buss meters. That is what interests me the most really, to see the amount of headroom I am going to gain and see if its worth going into this detailed audio editing, or not.
