I'd like to buy a new Vaio the next weeks, of course there are only Vista drivers...

I ONLY want to run Ableton and Cubase with it, can I install XP without any problems? Does XP recognize the chipset, etc.? Are there graphic-drivers?
Of course i don't need a webcam, but the cardreader for example would be nice...

just goto the device manager in vista and take a screenshot of all devices ...
then goto to the support sections on the websites of the vendors to collect XP drivers for as many components as possible.

i assume, that the chipset is not made by sony ... also the graphics chip, the pcmcia controller ... and so on

just keep that screenshot/print for reference, until you have created your own custom XP driver CD for that Vaio.

once you installed XP then and there are any yellow question marks left in the device manager ...
just look at the screenshot from vista device manager and you know which driver to get in order to finish the XP setup.

this is the most common way, if sony only delivers drivers for vista.

good luck with your research!

PS: XP bootloader cannot boot vista ... but vista bootloader can boot XP
(just in case you want to setup dual-boot configuration)

Go to Sony's site, & look for XP drivers for your model of laptop. If they don't have them, then it's a crap shoot whether you can find adequate substitute drivers, and so it's most likely a 'try & see' scenario, as drivers from a different vendor with the same chipset won't necessarily work properly, or at all (deoends on the device).

Use google
- [model] downgrade xp
- [model] xp drivers
- [model] problems
- [model] cannot
- [model] wtf
- [model] how to [ ]

Just use your imagination and don't waste time here with these kind of question. I'M SURE there is answer already somewhere. Computer related questions can be easily solved by google computer has much more users than people working on psytrance

What you should know -> you never find the whole truth from manufacturer's page when it's about vista First, resellers were kind of forced to sell Vista with a brand new computers, but we got our time extension to sell XP until 2010 or something

I bought HP slimline UK version, there was a big label ""xp compatible"" and quess what never get it work =) called helpdesk, slipstreamed chipset & SATA drivers and nothing worked.

I prefer to buy
1. Computer with Pre-installed XP

2. Powerfull computer with preinstalled Vista and use Vista Optimizer to disable not used components and increase performance

////

3. My recommendation
- Build a desktop by yourself. use steinbergs support page. Choose motherboard which supports XP installation from SATA devices, in most of cases, called "SATA emulation". http://www.steinberg.net/en/support/steinberg_support_daw.html

- Learn to use Nlite. You can rip off all shit and reduce XP CD size down to 140mb + your own needed drivers. and sure you can burn everything to one installation DVD -> XP, Cubase, ableton, all drivers, plugins etc http://www.nliteos.com/

-then you can spend 300e to Mini-Laptop to run Virtual DJ (music storage) and light music production

-i always separate Workstation and laptops

-AND IT'S UP TO YOU IF YOU AIN'T INTO JERKING OFF WITH ASIAN GIRLS WHILE WEBCAMMIN. GODDAMIT

Don't buy a VAIO, they're one of the worst piece of crap I've ever bought.

I've own one for two years, they're absolutely awful if you want to do anything a bit more advanced than web-surfing and lolzing with your girlfriend on msn.

Proprietary stuff everywhere, tons of things that is poorly designed, some drivers can simply not be found if you don't use the one provided (which are either old or for vista).

Plus they're too expensive for the hardware they offer, you'll get something much better for the same price.

Ok, let's start:

I'll buy a "Sony Vaio NS12M/W" with 3 GB , 2GHz, and 800MHz FSB. Good machine for about 650euros, or what ya think?

@realtime: sounds good, i'll do that screenshot-thing, and i'm using xp + vista right now at my desktop, but thank u

@dharma: no, there aren't that's why because i ask it here

@ naga: please try your first and second example for yourself, 'cause i can't find anything yet, maybe because this model is to new... preinstalled xp is hard to find these days, and playing live and making music with vista - never! i don't have the money for cubase 4 and I saw some people trying with bad results, hehe.. but, "virtual dj" , "light production" ?!?!? WTF I didn't want to know anything about your toys, LOL

@ psytiax: really?? well i know(and i belive you know atleast their music) several serious producers using vaio, otherwise i wouldn't spend that extra cash... and yes, it's JUST for music-production and playing live

"some drivers can simply not be found if you don't use the one provided (which are either old or for vista)." Hey, that's why I'm asking here, tell your experiences and recomentions

ok, if anyone got a story about turning a new laptop into a DAW please let me know....

I did exactly what you're about to with a Toshiba. Mine came with vista so i had to downgrade. It took about a week to find all the drivers for xp, fortunately, the laptop has been out for a while, so people shared a lot of drivers around. Just a matter of spending time on google and forums           Monitoring devices, know where you go
