it looks like the real tb303 is very hard to get for a reasonable price. so i am opting for a xoxbox. anybody heard about this tb clone or is owning one? 550 euro is the asking price for the xoxbox. any comments? |

what? you build me a real good LA-2A clone for 550 euro?
well.. i guess not, otherwise i would immediately order one. or a 1176/78 and i am serious.
anyhow this idea of doing clones is really interesting me. i read that most of the costs of high-end hardware is in the devellopment and research. the parts are not that expensive. the schedules and components should be available. still to me it looks like an art to put it together, not for me to do it.
you have experience with this? the idea to have good ssl, neve or whatever high-end gear clones for affordable prices is atrackting me. as i read that they can sound as good as the originals.

well, yes, thay can sound even better!, but its not that easy with Neve and SSL
here is an Gcomp-ssl pcb and the small chips is progremed...so all this process cost $$$ and take alot of time.

here you see a Neve1081

Look at this monstar!, what a great electronics! look at the vol knob (potentiometers, stepped
attentuator), this is a super upgrade for the 1081!. You can make those things sound so much better if you can aford and know it of coruse...
so, its not that cheep, and some parts very hard to find..anyway, La-2a is vacuum tube(4) based and its very easy to deal with, the parts is easy to get, borad..etc.., i would say go for a local electronics store and pay them to build you one if you have all the circuit schematics and parts.., those brands your talking about(Neve SSL)are vintge tech, class a electronics and not so easy to deal with.
anyway, hope that halp
Cheers

thanks for your more in-depth answer. i will do some more research on the LA-2A. i have it on uad and its a good compressor as emulation already.
good to know that DIY is not for every type of gear. just saw that the real LA-2A is little bit less then 3000 us$. so a good clone for the costs you mentioned is really smart.
what about the 1176 is this one to clone like the LA-2A? to have this pair would be really great. i use these two from uad a lot.
it sounds like you did it already, how would you estimate the costs for putting together the LA-2A?
obrigado

the parts will cost you 565$ (1:1) and the work can cost you about 300-500$, so it will be about 800-1k for LA-2A clone.
as for LN1176 it would cost abit more since you have to buy 2 times the parts, borad, case...if you want stereo of corus (stereo means 2 mono units)
anyway, just keep in mind that la-2a from the UAD sounds diff from the hardware unit, the hardware is abit more dirty and more stable, i would call it analogish sound

I built already a couple of 303 clones, since they didn't sound very original I finally developed my own. It's pretty close.
But I have put myself on the waitinglist for the Xoxbox all the same, since I believe it will sound very original, and I have fun building it.
Adrenal Mode, I believe you ment "transistors" not "transformers". They are rare for the 303, but xoxbox claims to have enough..
I didn't know that it is so cheap to build a LA2A.
I'm happy enough with my emulation for the moment though Don't use it too much.

there are no transformers in the original TB-303, except something like it in the power supply which puts the battery voltage of 6v up to 12v. but this part is mostly not cloned, since it doesn't (almost) affect the sound anyway. I think you are confusing something.
http://www.emusic-diy.org/RolandManuals/TB303?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=tb303.gif
you can see the output and input (its not a real input just a mix in) on the bottom right corner. its directly connected to capacitors, then its already in the circuit.
On the top right corner you can see the power supply, there is a transformer. its not needed, if the clone isn't supposed to have battery power.
The obsolete parts of the 303 are the 2SC1583, 2SC2291 transistors and the 2SK30A-0 FETs. And of course the VCA BA662 which is a ROLAND chip. Its almost impossible to get it, and I tried substitutes, they change the sound... there are somtimes some on ebay, though.
it was great fun to build mines.. I almost know the 303 schematic by heart
The pic of the LA2A is incredible... why the hell is that thing so expensive... those b***...
Same with the Manley Vari Mu... that thing is almost empty...
@alex... it sometimes such a fight to get those kits running. I know it... you will do it!!
