That's what I just said!

The guess was about 5Meo-Geo not finding them good enough.

you can turn the volume down on the soundcards virtual mixer?
oh, and make sure you do this before using active monitors for the first time. I made this mistake and had my ears shredded by full power BM6a at 1m....never heard anything so loud in all my life.           1-0-1-0-1-0-1-0-?-0-1

They also have a larger 8030 speaker (5") with the volume control and they seem to have gotten good reviews. For some reason 8040&8050 don't have volume control in the front. It does seem a bit illogical.

5" is still kids toy (genelec themself sugest u to add a woofer to those)

the reason why they dont put volume knobs on monitors is cose in normal studio speakers stand in range of >1.5m from the listener and they asume that if u want to buy good pair of monitors then ur studio will be atleast minimum equiped

but again whatever makes u happy man
u can make music even with creative multimedia speakers (and they have volume controll at front)

Most good monitors don't have any volume knob at all. They might have sensitivity controls at the back though. These are not to be used as volume controls. They are intended to calibrate the monitors to your room and the level of the signal being fed into them. You are supposed to set them once and leave them like that.

5Meo-Geo allready pointed out one reason for not having any volume control on serious monitors but there is another reason: Any extra element in the signal path will affect the the sound adversely. The less electronics in the way, the better the sound (assuming that the rest is well designed of course).

And I agree with 5Meo-Geo, Genelec 8020 or 8030 speakers are not serious monitors. They sound very good for their size and price but still, they do not have enough bass extension to be considered serious monitors.
