I'm not sure this is something that everyone will have come into contact with, especially on a psy forum. But I'd like some help - I'm desperate to put some vocals into a couple of tracks I'm doing but I've never written a melody for a vocal part.
How do you recommend I go about it? Write it as a synth part that fits, then remove it and swap it for the vocal?
Any ideas would be warmly accepted. |

sing damn it ! sing !
no, seriously just sing it. than right the notes down with a synth for reference i guess if you need to.
but the best way to right a vocal line is to simply do it.
melody for a vocal is not different than writing for any other instrument . it has its limitations and advantages and disadvanteges just like any other instrument.

I had the same problem. I can not sing and i can not really come up with any descent(for me) vocal melody and/or lyrics, even if it's about a couple of simple phrases.
So, the only solution for me obviously was to find people who could sing. And thank god i found quite a few. I'm not producing psy so having singers was mandatory for me.
For you i'd suggest to try and find someone that has a descent voice and the ability to create vocal melodies for recording what you want. It's a lot more inspiring too.
From my experience, if you don't have it, you can't really do it(singing and vocal melodies composing).
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

first of all you need to train your voice (if youre the singer), its not just like ok im gonna sing now, and its gonna be b-e-a-utiful Or you could abuse an autotune of course, that might help a bit.
For the lyrics i suggest you look on a message board fpr poetry and poems, there you can find lots of people who may want to give it a shot and help you come up with some simple hook vocal.

Thanks for the replies.
I don't think lyrics will be too hard. I'm not into cheesy trance anthem type stuff, I was thinking far more respectable - it's not trance anyway. I'm exploring new styles for a bit to try something new.
I can't sing at all. But I know some singers, I just wondered what the best way to pick a good tune to go over your, uh, tune. Spend some time with a singer and co-write it? I'm gonna jump in the deep end and give it a go.

i didnt mean that you use your own voice for the track. even if your not the best singer out there (and most of us aren`t) or have the best voice (which most of us dont) . but i`m sure its enough to be able to come up with a melody. how do you come up with melodies if not by singing them to yourself even if its not out loud but only in your head....?
plus it helps alot to be able to sing what you hear in your head realy developes your musical hearing.
and back to your question... coworking with a singer is always a good idea. cooperation is a great tool. where everybody benefits. win win situation.......

When I write a vocal I listen back to the part I'm recording over and I improv a bit on the piano just to get a feel for the flavour I want to bring out. Then when I have a few ideas I start singing random lines over the track (don't make yourself laugh too much).
I always record myself singing the part even if it's not for the final mix but a voice is the best guide for a voice. |
