Hi
Anyone could share some tips on insights on the writing worflow?
I always start a track by kick bass drums and a main lead, most of the times I m really happy with the initial idea but when it comes down to delevop the track until the main lead arrives, I struggle. Need to make the elements to work together, in order to make it "psychedelic", twisted.
I mean, when I hear most tracks that i like, theres lots of sounds working together one after another, some repeats, some not, i think this is tipical in psytrance, most of the times theres no melodies at all, maybe some small riffs, one shots, fx but makes so sense, builds the whole of the track.
Hope you get what I m trying to explain
Anyway, any writing tips, workflow will be appreciated
peace

http://www.psytuts.com/build-ups-energy-control/ maybe a nice read, dont take it as laws for making music, also makus has great videos that can help you,
read a bit about music theory, load a track you like in your daw and try to get the composed idea of it,
and most of all finish tracks, dont waist hundreds of hours just reading and youtubing but use it when you need. enjoy probably the most important aspect.

agree with vipal , i think also listening to some tracks and hear drops and other builds up ! its practice and patients
but yeah i start with kick and bass too ! then if i feel its flowing i got an idea like a lead or pad and so on ! and let my fantasy go ! in the beginning of production we have to learn allot and most of the time we getting a bit frustrated and we loosing concentration ! i take now more time for a track and i collect sounds ! a nice tip ? do every day a bit of practicing at were your problems are ! make some riffs , and let them be respons with a fx or other sounds !
and if you see a tutorial try to make it a task to work on ! and you come on a idea what is better then you saw on a tutorial ! by test some fx plugins on your sound ! learn to filter them to make nice sweeping sounds from it ! or to make crazy sounds ,study a preset what you liked and learn how to make it by yourself and build then one and see what other ways you can tune it ! you will be amazed ! and at the en d if you know your stuff it will be paying off ! and you noticing that you use less tutorials and you feel you got the flow of ideas it will come ! have patients and believe in yourself and boooom there you go ! Good luck

I start by getting stoned off my face.
Then without realizing what the hell is going on, I have half a track ready.

When i m stoned i usualy spend 3 hours playing the same loop over and over hehehe
Let me ask one question
when do you go to the arrangement stage (arrangement view for who uses ableton) do you have all of your sounds and loops ready, or just a sketch, arrange it and continue with new elements from there?

start to think in 32, 16 and 8 bars.
once you are used to that everything magically works...
for example make a 16 bar loop with percs, effects and all that stuff. copy and paste, remove the kick and bass from the last bar of the first loop and add a reverse hat or whatever and change something in the second 16 bars and there are your first 32 bars.
repeat the process...
i don't work with leads like in goa trance so maybe if you are doing that you'll may already need 32bars of stuff going on to play your leads dunno...

Hi there,
One other idea to start as mentioned before, load a "ghost track" into your daw and judging by the wave shape you could see how the track was built and add some markers on the key sections. Then start with the kick, bass and other percussions, then make your leads to get a good flow. Afterwards you can add the sfx, rythmic sections, risers, droppers etc. to fit around the leads.
This video might also offer some aid for writing your songs:

you will find out how these things will be flow from you work mate. each track that you will have in your mind needs different aproach on this.
all depends from what track you are working...
try to make the basic elements first and then work with the arrangement part but also this isnt a rule.
but if you want my opinion try to finish your tracks. will help you to understand many things about structure....into the wild....

Having a basic plan of environment before start, sets already some limits to help decide for the basic kick bass rhythm(timbres, dynamics, etc). The rhythm itself, the movement of it's elements and the gaps between them, with a good focus they could in a way ''reveal'' what is then needed maybe and at this point you could start placing sounds, fx and all while thinking of what this specific one asks you and cover those needs from a range of technics and sounds in general that you would like to hear.
