I write tons of stuff and finish like 1-2% of that

I learned good methods of more organized people, like my brother and a friend, So now days i can come back to old projects and know how to solve them better...

For example i learned that using the start of the arrangement as a tool box for loops and lines. So i start with making a loop of 8-16 bars for example, of course this depends on the music.

Then when having enough material i leave it all in the beginning and start to arrange like 2min in the arrangement view. So i never have to move stuff forward and get confused cause its all a clean road forward.

Before i used to move everything forward and after a while pick stuff from the initial sequence and get lost. So this is one method i found working very well. And i can easily go back a listen to the original idea, and maybe that first sequence is the main body so i know what i have to work to.

Also i am working in lots of programs nowdays and its much more inspiring, Still cubase is my favorite for sequencing and audio-editing. But Ableton, Reason and FL studio is good for different things.

And like Speakafreak i understood that a more conscious approach is often very good, like the latest track i am working on i have a structure and its so helpful and damn what small breaks and fills can make a huge different in flow and drive...
And Mantik - Great advice i will follow them.

Right now i am working on a track which i found great flow in, so i must go now and make the arrangement. But i am following a structure which is very good.

Same here, i don't ever go foward until my 'road' is the way i want it to be

imo it s all about practice and inspiration.you listen music that guys have maybe more than 300 tracks behind them (and it s not that much for a electronic producer).the more you make tracks the more easy it gets when inspiration strike.

imo today lof of new producer seems to spend to much time on production insteed of developing their musical skill with making lot of tracks,if you dont care at all about production you might finish tracks easier and make better music at same time, music is the priority .

I agree up to a certain extent, if you care more about the musical part you still gonna have half a finished product, its like listening to a bach composition on a 1940's ready fusion, youre not going to release that now a days, either we're gonna release music that is near to perfection or nothing, either its pure bliss from both production and musical side or else im not going to play it nor hear it

Your techniques get's better but no over all it does not get easier. If you want to evolve as an artists you never stop learning. There is always a new road to take. Also you increase your own expectations toward quality and creativity in your own tunes and by that things does not become easier. BUT you become more sure of your own abilities and limitations the longer you make music.

The day you feel its very easy to make a tune is maybe the day you need to try to go into exploring new directions.

Hey Disco,

Just curious. At what point did you decide to make an album and how long did it take you to come to a point that it was time for an album?
I know some people spend around 40-50 hours a week in studio. Thats just training, learning. Did you just make an arrangement of all the good tracks that you like and decided to release them in an album OR sit down planned it all the upcoming tunes?

Thanks

What I still don't understand is how to write the music without building it around a kick & bass.
That's what I'm trying to do for years now, and I always end up with nothing.
So people on here advice to just write the music first and then worry about the kick and stuff.
But without a nice kick and bass I just have an empty frame to work with, without anything to inspire me.

i usually start to make a funky beat with a kick and a bass, slam in some sampled breaks and start jamming out with synths and fx.

i allways try to make the sketch of the track in the first session and later on putting details and more tweaking and mixing stuff before finish.
just try to have a fun workflow and it will go fast when putting your ideas to sound.           hypnotica records

Ok mate, here some ideas:

a)

- Get a pad sound and write a simple 8 bar sequence of chords or single notes to please your ear.
- Then insert 3 synths you like a lot and set the program to enjoy the sound and then writes notes with each one. Question - answer riffs is win.
- Insert some reversed samples, stabs, build ups / filter ups to inspire a little tension up.
- Insert one weird percussion line something groovy not 4/4.

The idea is to create the overall sound profile of your track using synths and samples before even taking a bassline in. This way you can concentrate on giving your track a soul before it incarnates into body, u know bassline and psypercussion.
Try to get a very danceable and moving sequence of synths so when you add beats it will be much more effective.

b)

- Get some weird noizes, either from sampling or experimental synths and stuff.
- Process the sound through various fx wisely so it sounds interesting
- Try automating stuff like arpeggiators and sequences
- Use send fx and bounce a lot, also reverse+fx and reverse again...

Idea is to get a weird sound mechanism and get some sounds to add to the beat later, you can use the created result for an intro or a bridge, even for no busy parts on a bassline.

c)

- Imagine silence on the dancefloor...
- This is your blank sequencer, then imagine how to get the beat back to the people.
- Get some elevating pitchline goldray fashion
- Snareroll
- Atmospheres and pads
- Grow a lead on LP filter automation
- More elements, stacatto synths, samples, lfo automation, bit crushing percussion, etc.

Idea here is to begin by creating a crescendo either for the start of the track or for another section. This is something I like to do often since it inspires a lot to actually create a energetic build up then some clever sound manipulation to a blasting explotion + beat drop, then you can work on bassline and stuff.

Extra points for making it a fake beat drop, drop it to a reverbered hit or something and then begin to rise again maybe a shorter but much more powerful build up to drop this time for real.

This way you can start a track by creating assets you might find useful to place again and edit on other parts of track, like rolls, filtered percs and such.

Well, i just wanted to share some of the method i use when i get bored of bassline tweaking.

Key idea is to begin with something it inspires you a lot, enough to keep shit going. If you get creative block do as i do and just move your markers to the following 64 bars and begin "a new track" but in the same project, then you can switch thing from one section to another and when you less expect it you have 128 bars, then 256 and 7 minutes of ideas to craft a track with

Good luck.

I don't think things get easier, you just get better at them. That's what I'm experiencing anyway.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
