You can use whatever notes you want as long as they sound good.

Shiranui is correct. Music theory is the way ideally you would play the entire track in c major unless you wanted key changes however learn the rules and break them to play any note you want.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

It's a bit strange, but true, once you know the rules you can break them.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

And most of the time, notes that sound good come from the same scale.
Not always though.

But when you know the rules, you can break them without disregarding them. There not really rules but fundamentals. One you learn these fundamentals you then be able to advance and evolve from them. The more interesting your tunes are the more people will want to listen to them, and expect and want more works from you. That's what we all want, isn't it?            E-KLIPSE Trance Productions

for every scale there are "exception notes" which meens there is more notes that can be played but only for short hits and not part of the main loop

example:

A pentatonic = A C D E G

for good exception i suggest to check D"
adds hole new dimension to the scale but better not be used as main part of your melody           www.sattelbattle.com
