maybe instead of buying doepfer dark energy (since it has serious limitations) you should consider buying smallest doepfer case (the cheapest would be A-100 Low Cost Case 6U (A-100LC6)) with few basic modules. And then you can add a module every now and then according to your needs-after playing with doepfer for a while youll know which one u desperately need:)
Doepfer is great for weird noises and filter squelches even with most basic setup. Its also great for audio processing. |

or perhaps a http://www.vermona.com/index.php/en_monolancet.html
I was pointed in the direction of Vermona when i made a thread like this on another board
The Dave Smith Mopho and Moog Slim Phatty are also relatively affordable, 700 USD if i remember.
And; a rackmount needs either keys to be played, or a sequencer.
And; someday, oh yes, an A-100 will be mine, oh yes... (ideally the desktop-flight case configuration rather than teh giant-cube-of-tentacled-mayhem)
On a related note Doepfer makes DIY MIDI controller kits, if youre electronically inclined.
