psychedelic dubstep?

i'm an avid fan of truly pscychedelic psytrance - along the lines of logic bomb, hux flux, koxbox, ocelot, etc... as well as progressive counterparts in the sensient, tetrameth/shadow fx... so you know where i'm coming from on the trance side: lots of trippy sounds, wacky and intricate percussion, and an emphasis on creating a mental journey perhaps more than energizing buildups etc...

but i also really, honestly, truly enjoy SOME dubstep. or at least some things about it. imo, when it's not marred by shitty hip-hop vocals, uninteresting construction and predictable drops/wobbles/synths, it's excellent music to enjoy in, ah, "altered, trancelike states"

so... does anyone have any interest in a fusion of these kinds of music? dubsteppy, broken beat music that drops smoothly into 4-to-the-floor rythms, all amidts a backdrop of psychedelia - wild soundscapes, trippy fx, the occasional twisted melody?

fyi i don't like much dubstep i hear (Ital Tek or Escapee Planes are worth checking out), but little new is happening in trance. we have festivals here (in canada) where dubstep is played to thousands of trippers and hippies... what if that music was actually made, ya know, trippy shit?

what do you all think? not compatible styles? a bore? or an interesting idea worth persuing?

def an intresting idea. I see it like you do with dubstep. Some of it I really enjoy...the wobbling and mindfucking sounds are sometimes really great.
I dont know if this can be combined tho...def not by me, I still struggle with making psy

think less in the box of //genres// and just make cool music..if you try to 'make' dubstep, even if it is psychedelic, it will sound like youre forcing your creativity into a genre, which is always a turnoff for me((for example listen to Heyoka's old stuff compared to the [imo, "forced"]]newer stuff)), ..check out some stuff by Spoonbill, amazingly creative stuff! particularly tracks "Friardel" from Zoomorphic and his remix of Frank Riggio's "In Extremis" on the Gourmet Scavenger compilation..in both tracks he uses what you could say were elements of dubstep in a really psychedelic and original way
id like to hear your music when you do go for it so please keep in touch!

moondoggy, of course you're right - and this isn't about trying to stick to certain genres. i'm merely using the words "trance" or "dubstep" as points of reference. i'm going to make the music i like to make without giving really much of a damn where it fits or even who listens to it - but i am just curious as to how many in the trance crowd would check this shit out if being played on a mainfloor at a festival, for example.

wizack i'd love to hear it when you try it again!

sounds kool, so many possibilites- psy sounds at dubtempo ,or dubsounds at a psy tempo? Is it possible to blend wobble bass with psybass or just cutn'mix?...
it does sound like an interesting genre tho:)

this is the sweetest wobble ive ever heard in a track!

well most dubstep is at 140bpm or so (with 130-145 being the range i hear often), just with broken up beats... makes it very easy to transition between the two.

started on a tune now... starts out clearly dubstep but eventually a Kbbb is thrown in instead of a wobble.... slowly but surely 8-bar phrases become mostly Kbbb but with the odd "wwwrrrawwwww" or wobble thrown in to keep it coherent... i'm really enjoying this so far. makes me want to dance to my own shit.

here's an example of the interplay of bass styles: 1st is just dubstep, second is a half n half or so, and the final is kind of an 80-20 mix.

That is really the coolest shit I've ever heard, really.

Just want to say that dubstep ain't actually that much about the wobble,or not at list the midrange synth wobble as many dubstep producers tend to forget those days. The "originon" had subbass sinewave with LFO vibrations which made this coolest effect of spitting and sucking air on you, when you are near the sub.

Well,hmm,maybe something like this.

(put your subs up,otherwise it is useless. One of better tunes actually to getting blazed).

The midrange wobble was initially sort of "cover" for that subbass wobble, which made the effect also hearable. Those days, many producers who rush to do their stuff without further exploring just recreate the midrange wobble, without even bothering to cover up the subbass.

yeah, you're right. a lot of the dubstep i like (ital tek, escapee planes, etc) is really sub-oriented like that... but i do like the full-range wobble, too, sometimes. i think it fits better with 140-145 kbbb, where if i delved more into 137-140 proggy basslines, i'd be more inclined to us subby subby dubstep.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

wow, really cool shit.. its like psy and dub step blended together.. really happy i heard it... not too sure if general public is ready for it, give it a few years maybe, once dub will make its way through (which it certainly will, then there will be room to experiment, atm it sounds a bit.. well.. silly for lack of better word to a ordinary listener). as a student of psy and listener of dub step, this is a big brake through for me. Because i understand all the complexity of psy and simplicy of dub (or vice versa) anyway, really good... cheers

p.s. remember, dub is about mastering your bass, psy is about rhythm and that high end click.

i myself have been experimenting and here is what i was able to come up with...

thanks for the feedback... i'm actually surprised everyone thinks this is pretty cool. I'm really digging the idea and am going to go ahead and finish a couple tunes in this style, perhaps ready for the festival dancefloor next summer... who knows?

i like the mixture of genres, but i think that it should not be random. i mean dubstep is good known for its drums, bass and vocals, while psytrance is really versatile in leads and effects. so take the best parts out of the genres and mix them! otherwise, imho, it doesn't work.
