Finally I decided for a Intel i7 Pro Music PC Desktop, 16gb ram, running smooth as hell.,
also upgraded my lenovo laptop with a ssd hard drive and doubled the ram to 8gb
for overkill projects with minimum latency settings the intel is working as hoped, very well.

good.
now you cant step away from 64bit os because you utilize 16gig ram.
if you need a extra push (which i doubt with ur i7 setup)
look for "tiny win7 64bit" it installs just the bare bones os without bloat components. dont even put network components. i have a dual boot for that os.
super super fast for music purpose.
now you have theee best personal computer 2012 has 2 offer.. enjoy
you will never need 16gig of ram but its cool 2 have hey?..
while ur at it , get a nice graphics card to up the performance cause the onboard ones are always under par. (not music related but windows gui will run even beter)
do you use internal sound card?

yes i have heard about some people doing that, and i was thinking the same. and use only my laptop for net and such. going to do some more research on that, thanks.
well actually i do need all those 16gigs of ram and use them well. i now control my hardware synths with lowest latency settings, as well i can have almost as many vst's as i want open and going at the same time running smoothly.
but still if i want to go crazy and maybe use many high quality vst's like u-he Diva and some ohmnisphere and fabfilter stuff effects, i start noticing even with this much ram my computer are struggling.
hey i might even upgrade to 32g ram
graphics wise i am all good, 2x ATI Radeon HD6450 2048Mb Quad Head.
I guess i could have four monitors running if i wanted,
i still use my focusrite pro 14 |

wow ,with those radeons in, that pc is almost cuttting edge. you splashed a lotta cash on that box
one more thing. -that focusrite is still high end- BUT
firewire interface was (not 2 long ago) the best option for low latency. but now usb3.0 is faster bus.
i even think that focusrite utilize firewire400 not even firewire800.
but, for the BEST PREFORMANCE bus speed by having a pci card direcly on the mainboard.
for example: (not best example)

,it also has a front panel that sits where our cdroms go, need 2 empty slots.
there are still better pci-expressx16 ones out there
best example :

lots o cash
i just use this little guy:

won't help.increasing ram doesnt help computing synthesis, that's cpu duty.

I was wondering if a laptop can handle being your only working machine (i dont want to have 2 computers anymore)?
I was thinking on a ThinkPad T420 (4178-CJG) i5-2450M....i was planning moving to Mac but the truth is i never had any major issues with my PC for the last 4 years while producing music...and not all vstI work in both systems....

Can someone comment on this....i just bought the laptop and i hear different opinions about using it as my only computer (studio + playing)

Whatever you buy new is gonna be more powerful than what you had before, and loose 50% of it's value by the time you get it, and an additonal 30% after six months, so I say just buy the best you can afford right now and get on with making music!

Pretty much this.
___________________________________________
I once had to finish a project on an old G4 when my main system died. The G4 could only handle about a tenth of the session, it was a 5 minute section for film; ADR, foley, sound track, effects; the full monty.
I finished the project probably just as quickly. I just had to work in a different way.
What am I trying to say?
Will you have a faster computer? Yes.
Will you get any closer to your goals? Not necessarily.
A large part of the engineering side of music production is problem solving, finding away of achieving what needs to be with what you have.
