I bet I'm just missing something simple here, but...

I'll record a long vocal track, for example,

then I'll cut it up and copy and paste parts of it to different tracks.

Then, when I try to use the audio editor on the pieces, and try to pitch shift, I'll pitch shift, but nothing will happen.

Also, if I take the cut audio sample and extend the sides of it, it'll stretch out to reveal the whole vocal recording I recorded.

Is there some way to separate the pieces so that each one can be messed with independently of the whole?

The function is called Bounce Selection... it should be in one of the right-click menus.

if you got 1 audio sample, cut this in the middle.

rightklick on one, edit and example edit speed...
there will appear a window what says [NEW?]
then press ok... this means you only edit audiofile 1, otherwise it will edit the speed of the other sample too.
littlebit strange at first, but it makes sence^^           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

both ways will create a new instance of the represented file (just cutting it: won't).           http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject
