What´s up folks!
i´m opening this tread to see if any of you guys used linux to make music.
Some time ago, i read about a host to linux, but i dont think is good.. i forgot the name, but i´m thinking to try to install cubase sx in linux using wine, an windows emulator...
Anybody here know somebody who made something like?
Sorry the bad english, buenass!!

ok, a good native sequencer (this probably could imply a _commercial_ sequencer) under linux would be very interesting, i agree. but i don't see the point in running cubase sx using an emulator. |

i personaly user linux (sometimes), and all i can say is that the world of LINUX has problems with sound cards, especialy if u have a digidesign card or an expensive one, than forget LINUX, no drivers
MAC OS X is based on UNIX (just like LINUX) so i prefer u to get MAC OS X for x86, and u wont have any problem with sound cards

I think Jorgen Aase is planning energy xt 2 on linux. Maybe interesting to keep an eye on it.
He's got a forum at kvr.
I don't know much about linux so I keep quiet

Who needs your soundcards if there's no proper music software for Linux ffs?

I have Linux and I use it for making music.
However, I'm running a 100% midi-based setup, so the only thing I do on Linux is midi-sequencing.
For sequencing I use Rosegarden (http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/), since MusE was for some odd reason very unstable and I haven't had any problems with Rosegarden and it suits my needs perfectly.
For recording I'll be using 2 M-Audio Delta 1010LT -soundcards and Ardour. A friend of mine fixed the Linux-drivers for them so you can use two soundcards at the same with 2-4ms latency and no buffer underruns. If I had only one card connected to my computer it worked like a charm, but two cards didn't work - now they work too, I'm waiting to get my cards back so I can start using them. Note to all Linux-users, the latest drivers (including the bug fixes) are included in the latest ALSA driver library version 1.0.11.
But yes, using software synths with Linux isn't really an option worth considering. But for a 100% midi-based setup I can't see a reason why one couldn't do it.
Cheers,

@dtd - i was thinking about this because cubase sx is most confortable host to work i know...
@Plutodelic - yeah, i know the problem with sound cards, but linux is on a advanced age, so i think is the time to start to prepare myself to work on it, my computer under linux is 10 times better then using winXP...
@Symbiote - Thank you about the link man, im downloading it right now!!
@Sidefx - yeah, is really interesting, you can be sure about my eye on it!!!
@C3po - Thats the reason of this topic!
@Tranceform - yeah man!!! Muse is the name of the host! I download it, but i never install, some foruns did not recomended it, so i left behind...
My question is, and what about the vst? is there a way to use windows files to work on it? Thats the other reason to use an emulator to run cubase on linux..
Thankz all about the attention!

do NOT use wine to use cubase... use rosegarden (http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/). It's practically as powerfull as cubase, and best of aal, its FREEEEEEEE use audacity as audio editor. Don't forget to install the JACK server!!! I's a great tool, it's like a patchbay for audio and midi inside the computer, even macintosh doesn't have this...
start looking here. http://linux-sound.org/
linux is actually a very good platform for audio, just waiting for VST support... |
