hi guys,

Any of you worked a collab with someone and ye both used different DAWs? I thinking of doing this and i use Logic 9 while my friend uses Ableton.

I know its possible using all audio files for synths etc but are there any other tips or ideas that would speed up workflow etc

many thanks           planet arium

You can save patches in synths.
Which gives you some freedom.
And then bounce the rest to wav.

when you start the mix, post production ,you can export the project in .OMF file,"universal " file

edit:ableton not support OMF files :S          http://soundcloud.com/epoptes/tracks

I'd advise working in all audio with a rule that channel faders are left at 0dB gain applied to the exported audio (ie gain applied at export), or alternatively, one person is in charge of the mix. That, and having a standardised naming format for the audio ie

"PhatDrumLoop_64_1_1"

To say where a new part should be placed.

But better yet would be if one of you compromised and worked in the other's sequencer for the duration, because it will be a *lot* easier.

- save presets of vst(i)
- name your midi's with as much data in the name as possible, for example:

"albino lead 16 C E G efx 1"

albino: vsti
lead: duh...
16: bars length
C E G: for pads or bass: the notes used
efx 1: efx rack 1: could be a preset using a dedicated vst-rack plugin or could refer to a combination of efx you shared.

- for drums: audio!

- when you're near the end of your song and you have agreed on certain things (like the soundeffects used once the song length is fixed): use wavs of the entire song-length. That way you won't mess up timing or lose time fixing that.           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

simply unreliable, a music should be written on a singular DAW in order to flow properly

it can be made, but certain sounds only came up wortking automations in a certain way or mixed with the right fx...

completly unreliable, unless you have everything in wave and you just want to mix in other daw, or try to add something, but for music making, people need to work in the same open project...

In studio one, there is Automatic Option to export RMX Pack, i mean Stems for it...and send .fxb banks, some of synths...learn better your DAW, and you will learn it... if you are a such a fucking noob, go learn tutorials from DVD's... Go Mate ! Good luck...(:           ---------------------------------------------

quickes way is to make half track each one, export all audios from start of the song till the point u created, then send to the guy that will build the other part, if u want to keep some melodies and sounds and plug in presets, u can export(midi files, .fxp files, plug in preset chain) etc., or u can also work in rewire mode ( don't know if its possible with logic and ableton, but i really think yes, on cubase and ableton or reason, it's possible), but i suggest to make half track each one, quickest way to save time and stuff for me!!! could not agree less

open your minds, sound is just like clay, the daw is just a sculpting tool.

am involved now in a project in it we are three people from three countries with three main daws and different supporting tools.

when the vibes are right everything works like magic.
we all have some roles and do what we know to do, and we each bring the vibe and push each other's envelope. works

on my new album there are 5 collaboration tracks, and i have 2 sideprojects with different people one of wich is thousands of km away from me and we never had problems we all work in different daws (logic, live, cubase, Fl ) and we manage to do just fine

we usually start by one making the idea, and then he sends off the parts (wav midi or whatever) to the other dude and from there its a ping pong match sometimes with fever throwbacks depending on the time constraint and the inspiration
