I know this has been talked few times ago , but not to deep IMo .
Many ppl say they work in audio . I would like to know of methods of working . Is it just rendering sounds to reduce cpu usage ? or are there any other things involved in this ?
Any tip or description of method of working ( workflow ) will be most wellcomed friends .
... lets see where this one goes ... |

Personally I don't like converting midi tracks to audio until the last possible moment cause once it is rendered it is rendered and there is no instrument tweaking to be done. Of course any reverse-fx is going to need an audio file to reverse but reverse reverbs, delays, compression and the like are usually left until the track is almost done I would imagine. I guess the whole render to save cpu is covered with freeze functionality but this can't really be considered working with audio, I just wish it is possible to freeze bus channels as this is where my cpu leaks now.
A friend was working on a project of his at mine where he programmed the beats (nu breaks) with an Akai sampler and used the Akai to trigger his Virus for synth sounds, all of this on headphones at his place, seeing as his monitors are knackered. He then recorded all the beats and synth lines into Logic (at my place) as audio off the Akai and Virus then proceeded to arrange them within surprisingly enough the arrange page of Logic. It was an interesting way of working and new to me but like I said there is no way to tweak the attack on one of the drums or synths. The cpu load was non-existent which is a rarity for my laptop though.

Personally i work a lot with audio cause im tired of 'angry cpu'...
But i keep my midi tracks muted if i wish to change this after.
I know that it isnt the better way but this is the way that i used to feel confortable. |

Me, I work entirely "in audio" as you say. Most of my time is spent in the Logic arrange window, like your buddy there. Never need to change windows, as the channel strip for the selected channel is displayed arrange. My only piece of gear besides my iBook is a nord lead 2, which I use only rarely to record a few sounds. I don't record any riffs really, most of my work is cutting up and rearranging audio. I create a lot of my audio material in max/msp. I will record long improvisations on synths I build in MSP and use portions of that in a track, cutting up the good bits and rearranging them. I put effects, render that, and cut that up again. Sometimes, I render a 100% wet output and use that as material to work with. You get the picture? |

It's not just to save CPU, it's also to encourage you to make commitments, to discipline yourself toward track completion, and to more than double your sonic toolkit by making many more effects and tools available to you than you would otherwise have while working purely within the MIDI spec.
You can always mute and save MIDI tracks, and stuff them in a folder with your audio, but you can't always get your most twisted sounds out of a bunch of live channel inserts, unless you've got a 10Ghz PC.

br0d - good point! i find my self having problems with discipline and by exporting to audio i might do what needs to be done in the first place instead of running around trying to find other solutions to my ideas...
thanks for the reminder! |

i think its easier now with freeze functions
you can work in audio and having your midi tracks there if you need further changes, there is no need to have everything in midi, stuff like kicks, drum loops or certain leads which you only need few changes in your patterns, so why you should open a vsti when you can edit in audio directly?

I find it very hard to work with the freeze function . I personaly work in the old way of rendering midi tracks and importing them back to the project . Freeze dont let you edit the audio , even simple things like copy and paste . As far as i know you dont have an option to freeze just part of a track so the procces take a lot of time too . |
