Hehe, I don't listen to much darkpsy either but I've gotta admire the synthwork and sequencing.           www.facebook.com/chemogen

Do you think it's the same idea you find in hi-tech/dark-psy lead/fx arrangement that are constantly changing every 1/8th note or so?

dont know i dont listen to "hi-tech/dark-psy" but i think that would be tooo much for me to fill every 1/8 with something I think a few well placed and interesting one shots are much more pleasing then going ak-47 style with a bucket load of oneshots. Silence betwen the one shots is important to, because it is also giving something to the sequence.

i guess you can look at it as something like the "question & answer synths" but this is a bit shorter its like a few drunk dudes grunting in some conversation

one goes "BLAAARGHHH" (a totally sensible thing to say when drunk) the other one is first like "UMMMM!!!" (trying to make sense whats been said) a small pause untill one of the brains starts working then "AAAAAA" "BRFFFTT" and so on A weird conversation made into craaaazy peice of music

+1

Call and answer between your sounds is totally legit. Reverb and delay also make this sit reeeeaaalll nice in the mix - for my workflow, I'll usually make 4 or 5 audio channels, each with different fx or delay/reverbs on sends. Then, I start going through my sample library and grab anything at all that might fit. Then, while listening to my groove, I start throwing the samples and hits on fairly randomly until I find one that's at that perfect moment... Lock it in and move into another hit. Eventually, I've got 1 or 2 sounds on each of the 4 or 5 channels, all with their own place in panning and reverb, all fitting to the groove. If I want to, I will sometimes bounce that whole part and throw some compression or multiband or disto on it for cohesion. Eh, fuckit, throw Ohmicide or PredatOhm on ALL THE THINGS! *looks around sketchily*

To do this kind of thing I load up a synth, tweak it until crazy sounds are being made, then bounce sounds to audio, while simultaneousy tweaking the synth further to modulate the sounds manually. After about 10 minutes of this I usually have about 20 neat little clips and "one-shots". Then just line em up in some interesting way, add some effects like loki was sayin. Makes for some neat melodies.           --

This topic is great, as this is the stuff I have the most problems with aswell.
I try to get around it now by reading about rhythms&polyrhythms now, but I guess this thread is more helpful.
A tut about it would be even better!

I have problems with arranging the notes and creating intresting rhythms aswell as making the sounds for that. Its kind of difficult for me to make enough short sounds that fit together and sound good in question&answer...

Thanks for the hints here so far...some good input for my next practicing session!           My first track:

a very simple short technique would be!

take a one shot sample and load sugabytes tornado into the mixer bus!

choose Dictate me option and automate it with the different fx dere!

u can also combine this wid grossbeat and db glitch!

u will realise u can make some real killer twisted dark sounds in just a few minutes!

also u can use the same technique and use different samples and automate dem!

finally bounce to audio and den again play with the ADSR and pan etc etc to your taste!

this technique is something i follow for making night time sounds and particulary on high bpm!

let me know if it works

im thinking there is a better way of doing it with out multi fx plugins like dblue glitch. it dose some really cool fx but i think in the zen mechanics track i posted, the sounds are placed with alot more thought rather that random fx. i may be wrong but i dont think multi fx plugins are whats needed for this.

well everyone has their own way of working honestly. but yes i will definitely agree that placing each and every sound is another thing altogether but just give a try at the way i have mentioned it can help u produce some really good sounds and den u can bounce to audio n den re group dem to make some nice patterns!

Tricky part of this subject IMHO is not much about how to tweak synth, or what FX to put into.

The real deal is the sequence itself, the rhythm.

I have found the following to help:

DRUM FILL MENTALITY
Use your one shots as drums, and arrange them in the way you would create a TOM fill. Basically its about repeating some and alternating them in a coherent phrase.

REVERSE / HIT
Combine REVERSE (fade in) sounds that grow with time (even if they are very fast) then use HIT sounds to accentuate.

MAKE IT FLOW
Your sound phrase must say something in an interesting way. Just vengeance shots sequenced one after the other with no fx won't work in a million years. You have to carefully place the hits in a way that it flows. This can mean lots of hours nudging clips one sixteen right / left until it feels good the ear.

COMBOS
Dry sounds by themselves are pretty boring but create another one or maybe a couple and you can begin having fun by playing one against the other. Sound shots like to work together.

VARIED LENGTHS
Using just short acid sounds can get boring, but combine some pad chords, some bitcrushed mid size squelches, and some short bursts and you have a much more interesting thing going.

SEQUENCES
Arpegiators, trancegated leads, and automated glitch fx can work very well to. Bounce to audio, chop them and make them work in your arrangement.

Hope it helps, happy tweaking.

Thanks for all the great feedback guys, really inspiring stuff and thanks a lot Psilo for offering to do a tut and finding us that video.

Been working on something like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29414430/Oneshots.mp3 can probably work more changing up the sound and editing them differently but I like what I have going so far, definitely a step up.           www.facebook.com/chemogen

Hell yeah, thanks for hooking us up with that vid PsiloCybian. I've been slicing and dragging by hand, for whatever reason I haven't experimented with triggering them myself off a pad. So excited to try this out!
