Hello Friends,
I was actually reluctant to post this topic.May be I know the answer to this but I would still like to know your opinion.
Does your work get affected by music. For example, you are at work and your mind is just not there and you are thinking about how to improve your music prodiction. If this happens to you how do you overcome it.I am like, when I am producing I am worried about work and when I am working I am thinking abt music(strange but true).PLease help!!           "We surely know by some nameless instinct more about our futures than we think we know."

I solved this problem by getting a job I don't give a damn about which also gave me time to stand around writing stuff down... not the best solution by a long way, but you can't control your worries. All you can do is give it 100% on what you're doing when you're doing it.

I work as a sound engineer and my day job influences musicmaking a lot. After a full day of recording actors and mixing commercials my ears are so tired that its hard to invent something new in the evening. All I wanna do is play a game or watch movie or take a bycicle ride
However the same time working in the studio (this is actually a very small one, but still) I've learned many new things which, as any new experince, are very usefull.

makus i've been doing the exact same job for 9-10 months now and for sure it has pretty unproductional effects in my personal life indeed :| ... had to wait until weekend every fukkin week in order to get some focus or inspiration.

so as for the last 2 months, i've decided to stop for my morning job (commercials radio/tv), so i can complete my album, and i'm just working in random recording/mixing session @ Red House studios just to have some cash going....           extreme

im a net manager in a university here.. and to be honnest the only thing that really disturbs me is my few hours to sleep per day.. less than six.

Coz i expend all day working and at night start to work with music... in the end, my mind is going miles per minute and is hard to sleep...

Well this is a very good topic to discuss.
Generally, I wouldn't like to have a studio job, if it isn't about my own music, as makus said, it would kill large amount of creativity.
As rule of thumb, I would persue a job that at least pays my bills, and find regress into music I make. It should be a job that leave you enough energy to work on your tracks as well. I used to work 5-6 days a week for 9 hours day as a dentist, which would render me useless at the end of the day to do anything els. I just would come home and take a nap for an hour, do work-out an hour and maybe couple of hours for music making. So I reduced the days to 4,thus I regulate and balance myself with more music to keep my sanity. There are jobs like mine, which requires putting proven methods to achieve an expectable result, which can be well balanced out with music work to put creative elements together to achieve unexpectable result. For me it's like Yin and Yang.
I don't like watching too much TV, unless it teaches me a lesson or two.
Idealy you produce and perform music fulltime, and rest in your free time, but hey you can do it when you are paid good enough to pay your bills, have a pension and health cover , have a saving and mortgage going, and that for long period of time and for our genre it means you got to be of bests. Otherwise , before you know, you are old er and nothing to hang on to, and your little bubble won't last long, unless you choose to live like a Yogi or something.
Obviously, good music results come from spending ample time of hardwork.

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

I was lucky enough to get a job in the synth/software department of a music store...
so I spend most of my days messing around with equipment..
we also made a little setup to jam when we are bored...

its fun, it pays the bills, and I get freebies and good discount

most of the time, it doesnt even feel like work...

I am pretty happy about it

I often tend to walk around in zombie mode at work, when I have a good project underway at home or like now, when I'm preparing a liveset.

I don't know how to deal with it, but as long as I do my job, then I don't think it matters really...           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

I work in the radio as audio technician, work is fine, but with girlfriend( who lives far from me), job, gigs as dj plus organisation of event, I have not much time at all to make music

Hope when I move near my girlfriend I will find out some more time to spend in music production
