hi there .
ok i ve been mixing trance for a while with cds and it s ok for me even if i spend lot of time writting cds before my sets ...
now i was thinking to have a travel kit so i would be able to plug my computer and mix anywhere a soundsystem has been pull up .
i must say i was really excited by the allen & heat dx ,with Serato itch ,but never really used dj softs before ....
so what you guys would recommend ....
ps just got a good stash of cash after mixing in few parties ,so basically have no budget worry ,simply want the most trustfull(no crash in the middle of the set )and no latency ,are my most important points .

thanks guys           soundcloud/roakanan.com

Im using a dedicated 13" macbook with 4 gigs of ram and 120 gb ssd drive with traktor scratch pro 2 and a kontrol x1 for djing, it all fits in a backpack, easy to set up and never crashed or had any problems except for the one time i pulled the cable to the soundcard.

the X1 is nice but if I'd go laptop with djing i would want more than 2 decks. Anything similar to the X1 that is similar in size and can control 3 or 4 decks?

X1 works nicely though. Seen some people dj with it and it seems like to way to go although it needs more buttons and options.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

I use Live for mixing now, Traktor and Serato seem too much like emulations of hardware, which I really dont care so much about...

Using Live the Wonderful German Beatmatching Robot has freed up so much attention during mixes for creativity, plus I dont need headphones

I use my microKONTROL set up as a mixer, which does alright. If you go with Ableton I recommend looking into Faderfox's dedicated Live dj controller, which when I saw, I had to change pants. Theres always somethign teh Korg just doesnt quite do, that the Faderfox does...

If you use Live already, which I did before going digi, why not use it? As many channels as you have midi CC messages to assign to controllers/can manage during a set.

I dont usually prearrange my sets, however there is a bit of preparation involved, warping and normalizing, but thats really not much different than what is done with cdjs.

So, the question is then; Do you want to mix like hardware, or do you want to let the Robot do it?           .

I got ableton 8 but don't really dig the warping so far. I didnt dive into it very deep yet. But so far traktor and other software sounds better and is a lot easier (less work).

Do you have any tutorials that explain well how to dj with ableton? Not the shallow stuff but something good.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Let me see, I seem to remember finding a pdf about mixing with Live...

I could write something of a tutorial of my own if you want to know how I do it.

I guess I forgot to mention taht I use 7, been using Live since 6, gave 8 its fair shake and was sorely disappointed. Ive used 7 for about a year and a half now since then and don't miss 8 in the slightest. Runs much faster too.

I can use 8, but reeeeeeally prefer not to. Words are not sufficent to describe the mortifying effect of 8 warping. It just makes no sense...

Edit; well I found them but theyre OOOOOLD, for 3 and 4

Ill see about making a tutorial on how I set up a mix then

here they are https://rapidshare.com/files/1880794772/LiveDJPDF.rar          .

well thanks guys .
actually yeah i rather have a soft with a hardware feel and jog wheels .
i started warping tracks in live a while ago and it s fucking long stuff ....i mean considering the amount of tracks i would need to work out ....also even a small tiny decay in tha warping cannot be reajust afterwise ,just have to rewarp rthe whole track ....i thought i ll make my own music live set on Ableton live but not my dj sets .
also somethimes have to eep on going djing for hours and i like the idea to trow a track in a software an few seconds after it s usable in your set ....

about how to mix with Ableton i think you have few tutorials on their site ..
also don t forget to check Tom Cosm tutorials about how to use dummy clips and all that tricks in Live ...he made really interesting stuff .

i just pop there few minutes and have to go back to work ;;;;i ll post some links also later .

the Live manual pretty much has all one needs to know as far as technical details and setup, the rest is personal preference and style, and feeling out how best to set up the interface.

yeah I tried once to maek a master-file of prewarped tracks, i got about 30 tracks into it and it crashed and i havent tried again. It doesnt take very long, in Live 7, to warp a set's worth of tracks. For me...

You might just for a laugh try using 7 and see how it compares to 8. For me, 8's warp seems like it was thought up by monkeys. On crack. With only half a head. 8 warps the audio to fit the envelope, 7 is jsut the opposite, drag teh envelope to fit the audio. Most of us who used previous versions have the same complaint.

Honestly, i dont really feel interested in mixing anymore, at least at parties, more focused on my own work and live set... So I guess I dont take it so seriously.           .
