hi all
ive been using WinRAR to compress some audio files to transfer
them between my laptop and studio computer
(laptop doesnt have burner, gotta use floppy's )
anywaz, what i was wondering is, because its a form of compression,
does it seriously effect the quality of the audio?

nope.... rar is lossLESS compression: the file you get out is identical to the file you put in (byte for byte).
There are 2 kinds of compression: lossless and lossy. Lossy compressions always lose some quality. Examples are mp3, wma (hoho), ogg,... Lossless don't...they include zip, rar, monkeys audio.
You should use Monkeys Audio: rar doesnt know that the file is audio, so cannot compress it much. Monkey Audio is designed especially for audio files, and is still lossless so you lose __no__ quality. It compresses files to about 50% their original size.
I use monkey audio e.g. to archive final versions of tunes i have written (& mixes ive done)... when mp3 is most certainly not good enough.....

any archive dont hurt the the structure of the files inside !
even multiple volume rar archiving.
