windows xp, soundcard (emu AND onboard) are not selectable anymore.

hey guys, i cant choose a soundcard in the [sounds and audio]- option menue...
both soundcards are listed in the hardware, but not selectable (that option what tells windows wich soundcart to use).
this problem appears the second time now without doing anything... i just started the computer and there was no sound anymore.
the first time i wasnt able to repare it, so i decided to buy a original windows-xp... i formated the whole computer...blabla
this really pisses me of now, anyone have had a similar problem?
could it be a virus wich comes with any plug-in? (no, i have not the money to buy everything original right now).

go win7 and yes emu is not that good (i have one). Buying winxp NOW is a total waste of money seriously. |

What makes you think EMU is not good in general?
I use an EMU 404 for years now and never had any problems. Also I did read in many forums/tutorials and stuff, that EMU is quite good quality for the price.
Also, without knowing what problem he has, just suggesting to buy a new OS...I dont know if that is really helpful.
Yes win7 is quite different to XP and probaly the problem will be gone there. But I guess the problem can be solved with XP also...
The point where I agreee with you: Buying XP now is really a waste of money, except if you get it very very cheap  |

umm... the problem is, that i cant even choose the onboard soundcard... that means the emu should not be the problem here!

do you have the software cd of the soundcard? ..maybe try to install again or refresh the driver etc..
..atleast an onboard soundcard should always be there though.

I had a lot of drivers problems with mine (now its working yoohooo ^^)
I was not suggesting to BUY anything,
but if you try with a different os, (or with an other computer,) it can help to locate the problem. 
(well virus hehe ^^) |

after my glorious time with the emu 1212 pci i had 2000 years ago the only thing i would buy from this company is midi keyboards.
get yourself win7.. xp is just not worth it anymore.
maybe if you have a very old pc.
try to disable from device manager one of the cards and restart and see what happens ( preferably the emu ) http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

hi, try to go to control panel/administration tools/computer/services/ and in the list of services try to see if windows audio services are started...if not right click on the services end select start the service...try, dunno if its the solution , but im just repaired my pc from one of the most bad virus in the net(attack mbr of the pc) its a rootkit, and also stop my windows audio service sometime randomly, i find and repaired it with prevx antivirus.....after installed 10 antivirus for find it! |

i want to inform you that if your hd is everytime reading or writing, and the task manager services.exe is overload is possible that you have the same virus rootkit....this type of virus start before windows in the master boot record(MBR) and slow dowl all the pc and all the software you're run... |

..i forgot that prevx dont clean the virus at all, after prevx job, the MBR need a fix in safe mode with a MBR.exe(search on google "GMER mbr.exe") launched in safe mode by command line example(put mbr.exe in your c drive):
c:mbr.exe -f
this is possible after prevx scan and clean...i spent 14$ for clean but in 2 days of work on my pc this is the only solution i found on the net...
this procedure it's totally safe...im not prevx fan or something... |

the virus killed my antivirus program and i wasnt able to install new antivirus software^^
