Perhaps this has changed after SP2 came out but I seem remember when I bought it for my music making computer several years a go the major difference was that Pro supported multiple processors and Home didn't. Not sure if that's an issue now or not, but back in late 2003 it was.

Jikkenteki, you're right about the multi-CPU support. here's a comparison chart by microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx
Scalable processor support – up to two-way multi-processor support. Home NO, Pro YES.
But then, do you have two _CPUs_? Most people currently use a [multi- | dual-]core setup. Dual-cores are supported in the home edition as well.
cheers

Yes, Dual Core is not the same as 2 processors. Home will support a single chip, wether it's single core, dual core, quad core, etc. I believe it has to do with the fact that windows only looks at the CPU serial #'s, not the # of cores.
If you plan on doing anything with this machine that networks to another machine (like sharing resources.. printers, mapped drives, etc), then get Pro.

If you're feeling brave, I can thoroughly recommend wading through this site looking for tips on tweaking:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm
It's heavy going, but if you know what you're doing you can really tweak up your box for great performance.
