SOS just did an article about XP tweaks for musicians, and which ones were most useful, and which ones were marginally useful. Surprisingly, they advised that turning off a lot of services only saved them 8-10 MB of RAM resources. When I stripped out all but 4 or 5 serviecs on my DAW, I saved over 80 MB of RAM.

the benefit of saving a bit ram depends on how much ram you have. i'd rather have a fully working system instead of saving 50MB ram. today it's cheap to have 4GB ram so it doesn't really matter, especially if you don't use ram hungry stuff (normal synths instead of big sample libraries), i never fully filled my ram. i think the importance lies more in saving cpu cycles.
but i suggest to all xp tweakers that before disabling all those running services, read what they do and how their dependencies are. sometimes disabling can have side effects which you notice a month later when something does not work correctly. good luck finding the service that is needed then.
but still, happy tweaking!

Some Epson drivers won't even allow the driver to be installed without Print Spooling turned on. Perhaps you could switch after that, but I haven't experimented with it.
Which were the 4 or 5 services you stopped that saved you 80 megs?

I downloaded an "illegal" copy of Windows called TinyXP. I don't consider my copy illegal due to the fact I already own a copy of Windows, but this version has everything you will never use stripped out before install, registry tweaks and speed-ups included, takes up less that 40mb ram and only 400mb hard disk space.
I can't tell the difference from a regular XP install, other than its incredible speed, memory usage and install footprint.
I swear by it, and if you can get a copy of it, I recommend it completely. Using TinyXP on my old computer allowed me to put off upgrading my DAW for a year because of the speed I gained.

After messing around with services for a bit now i know exactly what each one does..So its all a matter of learning by doing!
If you're still ever unsure of one then just leave it on 'manual'..The link i posted has got other tips besides just turning off extra services..

Same situation here, I've dumped my legitimate installs of Windoze in favor of TinyXP.
It's kind of disconcerting to realize that I trust a relatively anonymous hacker to alter my OS more than the company that originally produced said operating system, but here we are.
XP is pretty much over at this point anyway, don't expect any more refinements or anything from Microsoft, they are concentrating on Vista.

The only that has me hesitating a little about TinyXP is that there is no network capability. Normally this is preferred I suppose, but I am considering hooking up a 2nd machine of mine thru FX Teleport.

I use TinyXP rev 2. Not that there is anything wrong with later revisions, I've just used it a lot and never had a problem so I've stuck with it. Later versions apparently add more things back in for certain configurations that require more exotic hardware, but I've never needed them so I stick to rev2.
PM me if you need any 'help'
Also, networking IS included.. barely ANY functionality is missing at all, I promise, I can't tell the difference between Tiny and a regular install - just the speed! |
