Hi,
I'm considering switching to the 64 bits version of Windows xp professional and 64 bits drivers for my M-Audio Audiophile, because i figure that a 64 bits system can IN THEORY handle larger chucks of audio per processor cycle, reducing the latency.
BUT... i'm not sure if Cubase SX 3.11 will work properly IN REALITY. Did anyone try this ? Was it any good ?

It will work, but if you're asking if Cubase itself will specifically take advantage of 64bit arcitecture, the answer still appears to be no... even with SX4.
Sonar (and I think 1 other somewhat obscure sequencer I'm forgetting) are the only ones that make specific use of 64 bit processors.
It's bascially impossible to buy a new chip that isn't 64bit these days, but it's kind of silly as OS implementation is so low. XP x64 has been kind of a wash, as so few companies wrote drivers in a timely fashion, at this point x64 has basically been abandoned in anticipation of Vista.
Anyway, I have a dual-boot system with XP & XP x64 at home which I installed to try Sonar. If I have time tonight I'll try some kind of bench test with SX3 and some CPU heavy VSTs, but honestly I expect there to be very little difference.

yes please do, I just got my processor in the mail today, now I just need power supply, ram, and a new hard drive.
I was thinking about getting a SATA or SATA II since my mobo supports them. Anybody know if it would make a signifigant increase in data transfer speed over EIDE? |

SATA II support 3 Gb/s transfer rate and NCQ (Native Command Queuing) which allows your hard drive to fasten multiple fileaccessing and things like that, so you should use SATA II instead of ATA drives... |

nice, I guess that make sense since it's a "serial" connection. Doesn't look like there is a huge price difference either, I'll make sure to go with SATA II
thanx for the info |

Hi, to be honest i didn't switch to x64 yet because i thought i'd be risking wasting days of potential studio-time searching forums and trying to figure out why some plugins don't work. At the moment i'm very happy with my setup and i decided to wait until i hear a stream of enthousiastic reactions about the x64 platform. I'm sorry for being such a coward
