I'm using Windows, (yes I know, heresy.) To anyone else using Win 7, when playing back your projects in mp3 form do you leave the Windows 7 volume at max, and attenuate with your sound card's physical volume knob?
Or, should windows volume be left at 50%?
I've heard a range of opinions on this from "clipping can be introduced at 100%", to "that's rubbish."
Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

OK so am I thinking about this right? Take Live for example:
Kick loaded into track w/ sampler @ default level, 0db... but say I want that to respond to velocity so I go crazy and bump it up to 100%.
Total dB has now been increased by 12db @ default sampler setting of -12db, so I'll need to lower the total track volume by 12db to stay at the same median level in the end... correct? |

The windows volume control is completely independent of your volume in Live or any other DAW - as longs as you're not clipping in Live you have nothing to worry about.
Technically 100% would be better as it would give you the most headroom and the best sound quality - any less would be squashing the dynamic range of the DAW's output as it is passed by windows volume control (i think - correct me if i'm wrong), although if you're worried about sound quality you shouldn't be using your computer's internal soundcard at all.

It depends what you get use to and what your using it with... My default for mixing with headphones is 50%, default through the amplifier is 100%.
Reason being is the volume with headphones through the sound card is to loud; yet with my external firewire keyboard's sound, that is fine at 100% with headphones.
