I need to programme some melodies for gaming sounds.
Will it be a good idea to pick up just a fruityloops pack, or do I have to get a more versatile music production software?

Yes, it will suffice.. I have done just that for a game.
I would recommend a few extra synths, if you know what you're doing get the new Zebra, hell of a toy, and maybe some good compressors and eq's, then you're set.
Fl is not necessarily more or less versatile then most other software, the question really is, does it suit your work flow?
It does for me

It will definitely suffice.
The co-owner of this company http://www.gameaudioaustralia.com/ uses Fl Studio for his sound design and musical scores for alot of big name games.
So yes not only will it suffice but you can make a living from using FL for game sound |
