Hey listen, seriously, do you guys make the kick more stereo with frequencies over 150hz+/- ? do you make a habit of it?

Look at the delay bass thread, but be really subtle about it. Listen to sum zybex for inspiration

sorry u did check the thread, yeh mate the same rules apply to the kick mate, tweak so it sits behind and not to in your face because the mix will become busy quikly sidechain if nececcery.

lol. i thought "sum zybex". even tried 'sun zybex'. OK, only 'Zybex'.
my feeling is, with pro sound,, either it is made more stereo in the mix by yourself. OR, the whole mix gets added stereo in mastering stage with some plugin, or what not.
but most definitely the kick in "pro-psytrance" does not sound so much mono like my mono kick sounds.

the reason for that is because producers tend to cut some middle frequencies from the bass for kick to pass through the energy of the bass, so that kick naturally sounds wider, while still being in mono.
experiment with merging multiple kicks at the same time (battery) using first kick for bass and second kick for body. its a great way to make your kicks sound more punchier and wider.. |

There is a funny psytrance track with a stereo kick
Pelinpala - Tauno (Out Of Phase Edit)
very weird and psychedelic, so why not?

Isn't the kick supposed to be the only component in the track you're working on to be imported as a mono-file (if used as a sample), or exported as a mono-file when using a synth to create it?? And IF used in a stereo-channel, shouldn't it be worked on in such a way both left and right have exactly the same wave?? I see most of you are responding that mono is the way for a kick, but reading here there is even an option to make a stereo-kick makes me wonder?? |

Yea I thought too that the kick and the bass most be mono. I know the bass most be. but sometimes the kick samplers are recorded in stereo---So the only thing in mono in my track end ups being the bass, and some panned noises...

Generally the kick and bass are in mono and center panned. But men in white coats won't come and take you away if you break the convention.
However I have a suggestion of how to get the best of both worlds. The main reason for kick and bass to be in mono is that low frequencies need more amplification power than high frequencies. A typical 4-way club system will have most its power on the bass bins. Now the other thing to consider is that it is said that below 200Hz we can't perceive the direction of the sound. Though I personally think it is lower than this and many mastering engineers also think this.
Anyway what you can do is use an aux send or bus to direct your kick or bass to another channel and HP filter it and work on playing with the stereo element above 200Hz. Blend this with the original and you have the potential of stereo on bass and(or) kick without losing the needed power of the bottom end. |
