I'm using nero burning rom to backup cd's to hard disk, wich format you suggest to use to have the best quality (size doesn't matter) meant as having the sound the less changed compared to original cd.

-mp3
-mp4
-aiff
-wav
-wave
-vqf

thx

If you want to import cds/songs on your hard disk you don't need nero. Use wavelab, sound forge or an audio ripper to import them in wav format in your disk. You need nero if you want to burn data or audio from the hard disk to a blank cd or dvd.

thx for your reply but forget the usual way, i'm not...he he

fact is that i want to store and protect original cd's i paid for, so when i'll be a grandpa they still will be new as hell without any scratch, that's the point.

but meanwhile i still want to listen to top mastering quality sound from my pc or from backup cd's, that's the 2nd point!

so you suggest wav format to have a backup that maintains the original sound?

You don't want to lose any audio quality so forget all the lossy compression methods like MP3.

Then it is best to go for a standard recognised throughout the audio industry. This will guarantee that there will still be a player available for your music in 20 years time. Of your list, that leaves you only with Wav or to name it correctly BWF. (Broadcast Wave Format).

You could also use FLAC if you want to save space. FLAC is a lossless data compression algorithm that will save you about 50% of diskspace without affecting the audio.

So basicly, if you want things to be easy, just stick to wav.

Zafer: MP4 isn't exactly a format as such. It is a container that can have all sorts of things in it. It is a bit like .avi or .mov.

If you have to ask the question, just use wav.

Just make CD images with Nero to your HD.

Start Nero>>CD Copy>>choose a filename like 'My AudioCD001.nrg'(you will find it below the tabs popping up by CD Copy)>>abort the process when Nero asks for an empty CD after xyz.nrg CD image has been created.

Beware, that everytime you copy a disk, Nero won't change its image name, so you need to rename it manually with every disc (second CD:'My AudioCD002.nrg'), otherwise Nero will overwrite the previous file without any notice. Also u need to uncheck 'delete temporary image' or something similar otherwise Nero will clean up the image file right after you abort the process.

This way, you'll have exact copies of your CDAs on your HD, ready to mount (with Daemon) and grabbing procedures. Very compact also.

IMHO

thx masterbud,
so you say a cd image will maintain the sound quality better than wav format?

only problem with images is that i cant listen to them directly from my pc.

but if an image gives me the possibility to better maintain the original sound quality that will be the choice

why is it that i only can copy a wav format with 44100 hz , 16 bit and not for exemple 96000 hz and/or 32 bit? it's a limit of nero software or any other software will have same situation?

by the way suggestions for better software for my purpose? Is "deamon" one of these?

Those are the standard specifications that all CDs are recorded to. If a program said it could rip from an Audio CD with higher quality, it would be lying. So, yes, other software will have the same situations. You can't increase the quality of a recording by copying it.

For ripping CDs, a program with better error correction is Exact Audio Copy.

Nero may record some pops & clicks if there are scratches, or not warn you if there are minor ones.

Also EAC has better internet database tagging & CD text works much better than Nero.

zafer,

the wav format is the first obvious lossless choice when you want to store your audio on your HD. When you grab a CDA track you basically convert it into a wav file. However, I don't know exactly what is really going on when you convert a CDA track into wav format. So my way of thinking was to avoid conversion by storing audio CDs as CD images on your HD.

You can listen to them by mounting your images on your virtual CD drive(s). To create and use virtual drives use Daemon Tools, you can dl it from here (pick the 32 bit version):

I've got 4 virtual drives beside one 'real' drive and it's pretty comfortable after you get used to it.
