Ok, so I've checked the site and didn't find anything bout it... otherwise please correct me
Why do a lot of dj's "settle" for a 30 second or minute mix? I've been playing for 3 years now, and wtih the music and production level of the last two years, it's easy to mix 2 or 3 minutes... this way, creating something new imo... With old schoolgoa, yes it's hard... mostly not being able to do so because the breaks are irregular (in my experience at least) but take for example neofullon or heavy dark psytrance... it's perfectly possible to do so... so again the question: WHY ?
Off course, I'm only speaking for belgium and the acts I've heard playing here... and i realise everybody's got his/her own style... but still... |

if u play 2 trax for 3 minutes together u baisicly say u give each track 1-2 minutes alone..
when u just dj thats your way to make something original.
im not sure it sounds good tho if u dont choose exacly 2 tracks fit (not on bpm offcourse in melodies and harmonies.) one another if u miss it with 1 milisec. it wont sound that good.
i make lots of 26 sec or 52 sec mix cause in 145 bpm as i play most of the set its last 1-2 "chapters" of the track and also 52 sec of new track is 2 "chapters" as well..
originaly? i do the tracks

I think there are many dj's that aren't really good at beatmatching, so after about half a minute to a minute their 2 tracks start to march out of sync and after 1 and a half minute they have a 'trainwreck'.
Another reason might be that it leaves the tracks more as they were intended by the musician. If you want to be creative, start producing. Choosing two records and pasting them over another isn't really creative imho. It can give great results and it takes time and some artistic instinct to get it right, but it's still the musical equivalent of cutting a sunflower from a Van Gogh painting and pasting it on a Picasso. So get painting !!! |

The main reason is that psytrance DJs still carry habits from the good'ol'DAT days. If there would have been a history of insane DJ technique like in the techno scene than things would probably be different.
Again, different than techno - psytrance tracks (are supposed to) tell a story on their own, without the DJs help.

i think a 26/52sec mix is enough to continue and pass the idea of the tracks...
but if you want mix longer i think you can use 2 cue point, let me explain.
the first cue point will be used to get the "originalty"... you can tweak both track as you want (low-cut,filter ,effects etc.) and to use the other cue point to do the 26/52 mixing to move to the next track.
if you try this out few times i'm sure you will do great things coz dont forget after a half a minute( or something like that) each track-tempo is changing

I believe in order to make a 2-3 minute mix u have to be very carefull if the tracks match together... And I mean as far as the notes, the melodies the basslines and everything... Nowdays we are experiencing tracks with lots of breaks event from the very start... Some one can call them tricks as well...
It can be done for sure, but I believe in order to be done, u have to get together the "best fit" tracks....
