What is the reason we come to outdoor psytrance gatherings?
Is it that we like to listen to psytrance on a big sound system? Is it the outdoor setting and the camping experience that appeals to us? Do we come to listen to the music played by the DJs organizing these gatherings? Do we come to get away from the stresses of our daily lives? Do we come to interact with the people who attend these gatherings? Do we seek some kind of fulfillment of our needs which is not possible in the regular club setting?
I think different people get different kinds of satisfaction by attending these gatherings. So much so that we are willing to drive long distances and spend extra money to attend them. We have lifestyles that are currently viewed negatively in the mainstream society.
If someone just wanted to listen to loud banging psytrance, all they would need a pair of headphones or even a loud sound system, both of which are pretty cheap in the US to obtain given the amount of money we spend to attend these gatherings.
I for one, come to these gatherings to get away from the mainstream culture promoted in clubs where we are expected to adhere to the set of rules set by the club owner. I used to come for the music mainly before but over time I have realized that the people are as much important or even more important than the music itself.
I do not like to be told that I am not dressed well enough to enter the club, or to pay exorbitant drink tabs and listen to the same mainstream “owner approved” music that is played with few exceptions here and there.
I guess the point I am trying to make is that I see these gatherings as an outlet to an “Alternative culture” we are trying to create in our own small community. We have expectations of “leave no trace” and “all attendees are participants” instead of just being observers of a party they come to. We hold our attendees to a higher standard of humanity than would apply in any mainstream setting.
The important question is, “are we still on that track?” Has it just become about people trying to satisfy their egos by being the person like the club owner, just in a different setting?
Do we still have open minds to be able to see the other persons point of view?
Do we still believe that it is important to be inclusive and not create barriers for people who threaten our own selfish interests?
Any thoughts?
You may think you can fly..but you better not try :) |

Some of the things that happened at a recent psy gathering have made me question the point of it all..
I was Very disappointed by what transpired and I am trying to go through my mind why exactly I go to these gatherings instead of just going to clubs.. |

Q:WHY!!!!
A:Because its what we do (some of us)!
Q:Is it that we like to listen to psytrance on a big sound system?
A: Yes!
Q:Is it the outdoor setting and the camping experience that appeals to us?
A: For shure... the great outdoors!
Q:Do we come to listen to the music played by the DJs organizing these gatherings?
A: Guess that depends who and what your relations are to that person.
Q:Do we come to get away from the stresses of our daily lives?
A: Some do.
Q:Do we come to interact with the people who attend these gatherings?
A: Some do, some come to dance or listen.
Q:Do we seek some kind of fulfillment of our needs which is not possible in the regular club setting?
A:I do, i find alot of more freedom outdoor, and usually much better sound too.
Q:Are we still on that track?
A:Some are, i hope the majority is.
Q:Has it just become about people trying to satisfy their egos by being the person like the club owner, just in a different setting?
A:Maybe for some but i KNOW that its far from that in all places/scenes... But for shure some mega-lo-manic ego dudes makes their partys to obtain "status" or money - and not to serve a community.
Q:Do we still have open minds to be able to see the other persons point of view?
A: Did we ? Some can, others have a hard time just trying...
Q:Do we still believe that it is important to be inclusive and not create barriers for people who threaten our own selfish interests?
A: This is slightly pink, conflicts between organizers, artists, labels, dj's is as old as the scene; humans dont all act like that; however its a sweet thought and i share it with you, as most of the stuff you write.

All of the above...
Don't take it too seriously, it's only trance!
