gtn come on- if he knew that why should he post such a question???

anyway- Dj looper,

in short,

compressor reduces the volume of samples above a specified threshold- it reduces the dynamic range overall and the difference between soft and loud parts of the file

in details,

The reduction is specified as a percentage of the value above the threshold.
for example, a compression ratio of 4:1 is a reduction of the sample value by one-quarter of the amount above the threshold. If the sample value was 0.6 and the threshold was 0.2 then the compression reduction would be applied to the 0.4 above the threshold which, give a 4:1 ratio would result in a final value of 0.3 (0.2 + 0.1). Because there is always a volume reduction with a compressor it is normal to include a compensating volume gain on all samples.

reply if you need some more info,

peace,

I compress kick & bass to reduce dynamic range of them, that means that the dance floor will rock constantly. when you put your track on big amps likes turbo sound, the changes in levels are felt more whice effect the sound.

hello friends,
Work with compression is is hard, learn & listen the difference when you change the parameters is very fine stuff.
In my experience you need some years of practice for good work with compression.

For kick i never put compresion (i have a killers kicks sounds)
When you work with samples & virtual instruments the dynamic is not to much, you dont need to much compression.
When you work with real or acoustics instruments, you need put the compressor (or limiter) allways, is better for recording levels.
For more compression & power fx I'm waiting the mastering session, where is possible to make miracles

Voilą, is only my poor experience with compressions stuffs.

godd luck looper

In laymens terms......i think one could say that when you compress the kick and bass (lower end sounds).....it lessens the space used across the whole scope.....so you can have sounds that are closer to the bass and kicks key without it cancelling each other out.

( 2 of the same freq. sounds will cancel each other out....so that it sounds crap)

Remember that its like a puzzle....you have to EQ all your samples Frequencies...in order for them all to be heard clearly.
