well I don't know if it is interesting, intelligent, enlightening or already discussed in other topic but let me tell you this :

I used to go to parties every week from 93/97 and at that time I was very aware of all the different kind of sounds of goa trance. Then I stopped and when I came back in parties like once a year in 2001, 2002 etc...
I was very surprised on how the bassline was exactly the same in every tracks.
In the 90's. the dat mix could not really be a tempo mix but good djs used to made a whole beautiful story with lots of diversity in sounds and basslines.
Then the cd mix arrived in so called "psytrance" around 98 I supposed, which allows trance djs to do like other tek djs, to create real mix in tempo, but the result is endless beat and same bassline going on and on for hours ...
I hope diversity of sound and bass lines are still present in nowadays parties but the rare times I went to parties thoses years I was surprised of this lack of diversity.

Last year I saw simon and gms playing in Paris
In 2003/2004 I saw djs from etnicanet and neurobiotic in italy, and in 2001/2002 , I saw guys like cosmosis ...and in all those case everything sounds quite the same

an example:
listen to first albums of electric universe, compare its basslines with those of first albums of man with no name, hallucinogen, xdream, astral, space tribe, juno etc....
now make a jump to nowadays albums of same artists or others and compare....everywhere same bassline
I think that nowadays the only subcategory of goatrance that have more diversity in bassline and sounds is progressive trance...

10 years ago a mix with tracks of prana, man with no name, astral, sound pollution, shiva chandra, space tribe, simon, slinky, UX, xdream, TIP, kox box, etnica etc... could be very rich in diversity from 1 track to the next one, and as a paradox, now, the more we have artists, synthesizers and possiblity of diversity, it seems the less we have it and sets are made of very closed variations of same bass lines....

Hey i invented a new bass line goes like this BBB-K-BBB-K-BBB im a freakin genious i guess psytrance(full-on) is a bassline thing the rest of the track composure is add ons... theres more to a track than only bass theres the zinggg and the wushhh and the plim ant the great PTÁÁ of the snare... full on should have already evolved to something better or just die ...fast!           -------------d(oO)b----------------

Older basslines-between 96 and 98-99 sound more "synthy" than "bassy" and the bassline itself was like a melody to be in accordance with the melodic nature of the music at the time. Today the most popular bassline is exacly how ZenMind described it and i don't see anything bad about it. It's a change and every change is good, well most of the time.           the sky was pink

how about the glockenspiel? That's so 1587... I mean, Bach? How commercial.

IMO the only thing that is really important in this style of music, is the repetitive beat, and dancing. The beat just helps us get into the trance headspace. Everything else is just decoration! But I like decoration.

But, the Mona Lisa does not get boring after a few viewings.           .

It's not the bass sound, it's the bass line that sounds so similar.

Electric guitar got boring that's why punk came and slammed the shit out of it and prog rock and tech guitar players took it to another level.
