I promoted indoor and outdoor parties in Hawaii for years, we started out with 15 people and slowly the scene rose, maybe to a steady 250 but not more. The biggest problem was the cops, who would show up in the morning, unplug the generator, telling us what we were doing was illegal and so on and so forth.
Given that we had dynamite beaches and other locations many of us can only dream about, this was quite annoying.
I also found it was quite difficult to get into the mainstream night club scene, not because people didn't like the sound, they sure did, but because a lot went on through the usual circles, some group of dj's that do not like "competition".
While I was able to cut through that near the end of my time in Hawai'i, I think it nevertheless a reason why psy did not catch on for quite sometime there.
Clubs in the USA like the known house/rap business concept that has proven itself and the established club-scene-djs don't like newcomers, maybe with sound that really has power, instead of the usual booty-shake bull sound one so often hears in mainstream clubs everywhere. Only towards the end, when I did an ongoing weekly night in a club which was successful on a Thursday, could they finally not ignore us any longer and approached me for sets in the big clubs and even radio and local magazin interviews.
2 months later I left for Canada
One more thing, American trance culture knows their party alright, there were many unforgettable moments of pure joy !

Hey interesting story Upavas..nice..
I always thaught the only music that is big in USA is the commercial hip hop.
Never been there so far but I imagine it must be golden psycedelic parties overthere.A psycedelic climate that once was in germany maybe 15 years ago too,so to say.
I wish for US party scene it stays so..

Why would anyone in their right mind want a underground scene to become commercial? As a warning just take a look at the scenes in Europe, Israel, South America and Asia. Enjoy what you have and protect it from commercial forces!

Yep, still glad psy isn't "big" in the US. I haven't been in the scene for too long, but everyone seems to agree that it ebbs and flows, but never gets too massive (which is good imo).
The fact that I can be part of running a party that will have a rastaliens live set (among other awesome acts) and not have it get too big is perfect imo.

@ Detox
Since wikipedia doesn't keep stats on ethnic groups not into psytrance vs. into it, I'd say, yes, you're pulling shit out of your ass.
BTW I don't think you should be watching wrestling shows in hopes of learning the news. Sounds like a personal problem.
@ lovenlight
Don't worry, just about everyone on Isratrance recognizes what a total jackass Detox is and don't take him seriously
@ many of the rest of you:
It's awful fun to jump on the wagon and dis America and talk like you know something even though it's obvious many of you have never been here.
I don't see any USA Isratrancers on here dissing your people the scenes in your country.
Not that this is going to stop anyone from running their mouths, of course... I'm just excercising futility now.
So keep on, it's of course fun, trendy and popular to hate on a place you have never been to and people you've never met. Besides, it's making you look totally cool and awesome, and feels good too, doesn't it!
Entertaining thread.

I think the word you are looking for isn't "fun" but "easy", as in "shooting fish in a barrel"...

I would pay good money to read that flame war....
I always wondered how "enlightened Israliens" justify the apartheid regime in their country.

The reasons why people dislike america are the reasons why I'm in the psytrance scene .
Popular hip hop sucks in general, but early rap was/is the shit. There are still some popular hip hop/rap artists who have talent (like mos def).

yes I agree completely.
About dissing and stuff... I myself have found countless great musicians from all possible genres that come from the usa..if it is jazz, acid rock, dub and suff or some experimental musics etc ..lots of great artists .
And personally have great contacts, and met people that visited me and found friends from there etc.
Great psychedelic spirits.
About other things which also are existing I have another opinion.Im not a hater just wanted to mention. The underground is great and big there for sure.

People are great.
It's nationalities, and the "us and them" mentality that suck, and is complete bullshit..... imho

I don't blame most ppl for hating on the US though. To most of the world we look like a bunch of assholes with our heads in that same place. But there are people like this all over the world (and probably on other planets ).

@Upavas Great to hear all of that.
My brother and I did something similar in Hawaii with punk rock when we moved there in 1982. Started a band, a local zine, put on shows, even had a mobile record store. From there punk rock and alternative music took off in a big way. But I have to say, in those early days we used to have problems with locals. There was an often violent reaction to punk rock haole kids on skateboards.
After getting into psytrance back in the states I often wondered how psytrance would be in Hawaii, so it's good to hear your story. I often wondered if the spiritual vibe of the music would work there and envisioned starting parties with traditional Hawaiian chanting and ceremony.

What’s with all the anti-American stuff? I thought we were discussing music...
Whenever I read a post ranting about “American ignorance and stupidity”, I can’t help thinking:
well, this post was sent over the Internet, typed on either a Mac or an IBM-compatible PC, which most likely runs either MacOS or Windows. Which one of these things was not invented by Americans?!
On a related note: psy trance is a descendant of techno. Remember where that came from?
So, can we go back to the topic and stop insults?

Of course there is a scene in Hawai'i, alive and kicking my friend, and they long for more psy, not the cheesy bull, they like music with power there, and they have become quite an eclectic bunch... I hear they have some Israelis there now who are doing stuff. I am actually thinking about visiting and giving a free live set to my friends there...
@ Rich, we never had any problems with locals, only the local police, there were locals who joined in the fun ! And I believe they still do, and they were sweet!

Bluetech lives in Hawaii doesn't he. Although he's rarely there, that's a pretty good local name to have.
I was in Maui a few years back, the fire spinning at the luau we went to was still the best I've ever seen . http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
