My kick sounds like it's at a decent volume, but it's still clipping with the pad. the pad gets chopped up whenver the kick hits. I even put a limiter on the kick. What do? Any suggestions?

You probably have some low frequencies in your pad that are messing up with the low frequencies from your kick. They are sounding at the same time, you could see it if you listeng to the sound in a spectral analyzer and and watch wich frequency is the one you need to eq, watch for a big pick!!!

The kick channel clips when you play a pad? or the resulting sum of the both clipping?

Try using a multi band sidechain, cutting out low and mid low frequencies off the pad at each kick.. Like that the pad can still have lows, but when a kick comes in the kick's low's are prevalent.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Thanks Bipolar, I don't know why I didn't think of that lol. And Knocz, I have Waves C6 multiband compressor, not sure how to sidechain it though. Any help?

You can always use some splitter vst and divide your channel to whatever number frequency band channels. Then use your sidechain vst on the low band.

multiband compression for a such task ? erm...do that with an eq and follow what makus said - lower the damn volume

some of the freq of the kick and pad are clashing.

use a spectrum analyzer and den sidechain those freq with the kick!! should surely solve the purpose

just automate a low eq on the pad where it hits the bass, easier.

hm drawing the automation on every note and again when you do changes to notes doesn`t seem easier to me..sidechain would be set up in no time and then freedom..

you could even use something like bluecat peakmeter and automate the single eq band on the pad. or use a dynamic eq..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

yes.

or you could also use tools that combine the 2 methods for much easier mangling

High pass the pad at 150, low shelf on pad at 450, start at -6dB and adjust to taste. Kick may also have to much bass/sub. I've never needed compression to fix this kind of issue.

Makus also makes an excellent point.          Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
