Hi man,

if your sound card have enough inputs channels you can connect your external gear directly to your sound card inputs without using a mixer but if not then you need a mixer to connect them all,

choosing you mixer depends on your needs, how much inputs you need, what kind of inputs you need(Analog, Digital)

I prefer in today's soft digital world working without a mixer at all or with a digital one if you must have a mixer- i think the optimal setup is if your synths have digital outs and your studio monitors inputs are digitally connected to your digital audio card inputs,

that's what i think, of course that the analog sound is warm and everything but this is for the "old less technological music" imo, but today the world is into digital and the trance music as well-

There are advantages as well for having a mixer like Eq, preamps, feel and routing options so check out:

And if you can keep it without the white noise,

very big isue but i'll try to help u as much as i can

well mixer is u'r working table in studio
if u work only vsti's and softs u wont need it cose u have any kind of software mixers
but if u have bit of hardware synths or racks u'll have to plug it all into one control (usualy mixer)
its help to route the sound flow from one box to another ,helps to combine few boxes, sends ,aux, basic eq,monitoring.

there is 2 kinds of mixers
1: analog-u probobly saw dosens of those with tons of knobs and faders on it
sound goes inside of those as analog signal and all the proceccing of sound is analog aswell
2: digital-those r tricky for those who dont know them
but easy for anyone that used to work on sequensers mixers (cubase, logic, reason)
sound flows inside digital mixers as digital signal (00110101110001001)
any analog signal that enters the mixer turns to digital signal and any signal that leaves the mixer turns to analog (thats why u would want to get good mixer with good A/D D/A convertors)

well thats a bacis idea of mixers
now bit of usage and advantages
as i c it future is points on digital mixers.it can 'talk' with pc at digital language (if u'r sound card have ADAT's ,optic,or any other digital output, when u'll plug it to mixer then mixer will give to each digi interface some ch' (like for each ADAT u'll have 8 analog stereo channels). the information that flows between pc and mixer totaly digital and can go up to 32 bit (not usual 24bit pc ) high quality with no looses and noises
geting the point.......???
cool
anyway digi mixers usualy comes with small number of actual ch' with faders (6-8-12 ch faders) but can take up and handle up to 128 ch
its works by pages of 12 ch's, so each time u control 12 ch but can jump to ch' number 120 in 2 secs by scroling.
one more advantage of digital mixer that u can save the presets of the console.
like u make one track...
have nice mix
u can save all faders positions, all sends, all eq and all everything that u made so far
then in any time u can go back to continue this mix
even if u'r friend zeroed ann the faders

ok now abit about analog's
they cant do non of that
if u looking for 12-16 ch mixer its still ok
to get 32 ch mixer its already a case cose it will catch half of u'r room space
u cant just switch to other track
u'll have to restore all the mix of it
bad analogs gives alot of noise
BUT........................
there is nothing like clear analog sound
thats a fact
non digital mixer will give u same sound as analog

so even if u'll get best digital mixer and u still wont be satisfy of the sound u'll send the mix into analog mixer to give it live

choosing a mixer is hard
my advise.... imagine u'r studio in the future (3-5 years from now)
what equipment u c there???????
how many toys u have???????
what sound card u have????
then think how to connect them all into one control without runing with patch cables all day long           Jesus didnt dance, but his beat goes on

Why all the mixers have more inputs than outputs? For example 24 inputs and only 8 outputs. If you have 12 hardware synths connected doesn't that limit you to use only 4 of them at a time? Why don't they have the same number of inputs as outputs?

UIU mixer dont supose to give u output per each input
thats why they made mixers
to low alot of ch' into 1 ch'
the outputs r usualy 1-2 main output,1-2 monitor output,2-4 matrix output (used to send different groups mixdowns to stage monitors),tape outs

what u mean (each input have output) is called patch-box or patch-bay.its looks like 2U pack with 2 lines of PL plugs
1st line inputs
2nd line outputs

well its wokrs like this
for example u want synth->compressor->pc...
u patch with PL's from synths outputs to compressor input and from compressor output to pc input...
its takes like 5 seconds to do but u will need to do it for each different combination of toys
with mixer u do all wiering only 1 time (if u know what u do) and u wont touch cabels for long time
and for u'r question.....
u can play each ch' solo then u'll have it on one of outputs
it wont limit u to use 12 synths .......
more the oposite, u cant use 12 synths without it           Jesus didnt dance, but his beat goes on
