A little Allegory of the Cave, eh? Nicely put.

Fight the good fight American brothers and sisters.

The spirit of the psychedelic family exists more in the US than any other place I've been to. Don't wish too much that it "takes off" as that might be the end the one unique aspect that the country adds to the global effort

To address some of BrettFromTibet's points ...

- Longstanding tradition of legendary psychedelic bands (like the Grateful Dead, Phish) and Rainbow gatherings have imprinted a lot of the psychedelic peeps for rock music

>> This is a super positive imo. Don't know how many of you would agree that all music is recycled in some way or the other. I believe so. If you grow up listening to the Grateful Dead and then discover electronica you have 2 sources to be inspired from. Inbred Electronica never created anything groundbreaking. A good example of this would be the brilliant Ambient-Chill-IDM projects emerging Stateside...so much flow! The evolution of the Chillout stage at Festivals...totally openended. We still don't have that here in India... but it all supposedly started here right ? Who cares what happens after that. ha!

- A shallow / material culture that is more conducive to less "deep" kinds of electronic music like breaks and house.

>> Too late... POP culture is global now. Thanks The advantage you all have is that it's been around for so long that people realize what it is and those who want to break free will. The more you have swimming in one direction, the more you shall have swimming the other way. Gotta love humans

PS. Don't diss breaks... please listen to the new Tipper album.

- Limited vacation and recreation opportunity compared to other first world. Europe / Oz makes it possible for producers to go on welfare, and for party peeps to take 4 week festival circuits... twice a year. It also makes it difficult for Americans to take holidays abroad and get infected by the global current.

>> This is why most people leave. But I've also seen the flipside. If you have the intention to create a business the ground up, the way you see it, the US has it all to do that for you. Easy to jump over the red tape. I've seen Americans make themselves the ultimate traveller. You guys also have massive leeway with credit. Guess that counts for something doesn't it ? This is hard point to address as I never jumped the 9-5 bandwagon out there.

- Huge geographical area keeps people / scenes internally isolated.

Unity in diversity baby! Watch the tribes come together for something like Burning Man and you'll truly appreciate the size of the land. An event of that magnitude might not happen in psytrance for a while but the network that already exists is amazing. Miss that part of the most.

- Infighting in the small scenes (trance vs. breaks, full-on vs. dark) affects it much more adversely strongly than in a big scene like Japan where there is more than enough parties to cater to every taste, and then some.

Simple tree structure... The more branches there are the bigger it grows. If you believe then you also know that trance,breaks,full-on,dark... ultimately do the same thing. Let it grow because THE Goa trance of the next age just below the horizon. Just branches, a few leaves. Wait for the fruits...everyones gonna shutup and chomp

Countries like Japan and Mexico never had that. The "60's" for them was Shpongle and day-glo in 1998.

i agree with this statement. i think this is the reason psy hasnt taken off here- rockers vs. ravers

maybe its because 9 out of 10 white people in america are scared to dance;)

and its hogwash to think that a larger psy-scene equals SCUM!! skazi type events sure. but in most countries with a bigger scene theres plenty of good quality underground parties with pure intentions and great folks.
as brett said its really nice to be around people who actually like what psy-trance is about and to have a huge variety of events and parties to choose from.. we only get a few a year!!

and im with you man OZ is magical!

Yidam,

I love breaks! Not dissing them. And Tipper's breaks are wicked. Just in general, your average Burner glitch / breaks set is a lot less cosmic and more "down to the ground" than psychedelic trance. And thus more mainstream accessible.

It seems to me that psychedelic boom in the 60s in US has a lot to do with it. Was any other country as affected by (re)discovery and then anti-propaganda of psychedelics as US? There was no psytrance back then and people found their paths in many different styles of music/philosophies. Burning Man is the example of such diversity. Is it the biggest psychedelic festival in the world? And psytrance is just a tiny fraction of it. And for a lot of other countries psytrance is a means to discover psychedelic culture and maybe thats why it is more popular. And this is such great news!

I'd say its because everything about 21st century america is pure swill. The women, the men, the children, the cities, the businesses, the highways, the cars, the governments, the laws, the food, the private property, the money, the air, the water, the music, the culture, etc.

in fact, it seems the only recognizable american cultural icons are fast food and hollywood movies, both of which are an insult to real culture.

so, yeah, i think it hasn't taken off in america because this nation is a big pile of bullshit. pardon my pessimism, but i've been beaten into it, and would rather leave america than try to fix it

I want to add that America is not as dumb as it seems. I have discovered a lot of trends that are not mainstream and seem quite interesting. I.e. Church of Four Quarters, Starwood festival, Rainbow festival and Renaissance festival, Tribal fest and who knows how many more. I keep discovering them. Or dont go far look at Oprahs book club, you can find 'real' truth there if you look good enough. And what about MAPS? the only or for sure the biggest organization dealing with psychedelic research. Based in US.
But I guess the percentage of people is too small to notice, and back to our topic, they dont listen to psytrance...

Brett
Heard much about the takeover of glitchbreaks at BM till I got to experience it myself.
In the middle of the playa, a massive soundsystem hauled by these spacecowboy madmax freaks with pumping basslines sweeping dust into your face. The
DJ's spinning vinyl in his spaceship... dancers wobbling under the moon. I wasn't on anything and didn't need anything to trip out of my miiind. Pretty powerful experience and definitely one to make a mainstreamer go "wtf was that!"

Okkkay its not psytrance but look at the amount of diversity within the genre itself. ha. Compare that with a cross genre fusion like glitch-hop. Things are happening out there musically. Sounds like those have totally made their way into the american downtempo-psy scene creating a bridge between the masses and the underground. You can actually find trance following the music instead of having to wait for someone to take you to a party. I think that'll eventually attract more proactive musicians than party trippers.

Anyway, glitch n' breaks have just made their debut in India and it's damn exciting. You don't even wanna know what mainstream is out here!

vector_0 ... where are you thinking of going when you leave?

i think there a thread like this every year or two..

the size of the country has something to do with it and its love for instrumental music - the indie rock scene is HUGE compared to the electronic scene. the most popular electronic outfits are crossover jam bands like STS9 and that's also the way psytrance is getting popularized (see Twisted Conspiracy tour).

and Vector_0 - try to travel around the US before making such absolute statements. this country has a lot of amazing stuff to experience and lots of real people to share it with.
          ..it's just another party..

I agree about the down-tempo psy and even to the proggy psy. If you have Verizon and you want to download music on your cell you can find both Evan Marc and Bluetech, along with Shpongle, Antix, and others along those lines. Also I know what most people think about Infected but they play the states A LOT. I've been in Vegas for almost 6 months now and Infected has played here 3 times already.

I guess psy is growing but electronica of any form is "underground" in the states.

I disagree. Look at Winter Music Conference or DEMF/Movement in Detroit (75 000 attended this year).

And don't forget about house music
