Colin there are different kind of Sadhus. The link u have put clearly states that,
"The term sadhu comes from the Sanskrit for "accomplish" and can refer to any religious ascetic or holy man. They include saints of various traditions, men (and occasionally women) who have left their homes to concentrate on physical and spiritual disciplines, and also hermits, magicians and fortune-tellers."
Now explaining about this would take me ages my friend. Like I said in my previous mail, i don't wanna start up another story here.
Respect to everyone,
Bom

lets be clear here .. he`s no sadhhu , very average dj , track selection is getting worse by the gig (imo), and this sadhu business is something he uses as a marketing tool , now , before all the bhakts jump on me , let me be clear .. Im not saying the man isn't spiritually inclined , but he does use it as a very effective marketing tool none the less .. too much hype

@ Pete... plz .. A sadhu does not dj... a sadhu does not travel by flights... a sadhu does not charge exorbitant fees to play. If he claims himself to be one... he should be doing everything for free. Because Sadhus dont live off money. I hate it when people use religion as a marketing tool! And this u hear from an indian. So plz...spare me the horror!

Who told u Sadhu does not travel by flight???? I live in Vancouver and every month there is a Sadhu or a Yogi landing here, And by the way they do charge a fee if u wanna attend there lecture's. I went to listen to Dalai Lama, even he charges a fee. Does that mean he is not a monk?????
Sumith, thank you for reminding me of my Indian heritage but like u requested, I will spare u the horror.
Peace

With all due respect:
A Sadhu should not travel by flight, a Sadhu should NOT need to travel by flight. The sadhus who you seem to come across in Vancouver are a far throw from the essence of a what a true Sadhu should be. Sorry Goa Pete, commercializing religion has been the first step towards tainting the true concept of non materialism...this is what a true sadhu is. It is a quest for the spiritual while denying the material. If the guy needs to play music, playing for free would be the true spiritual endeavour. Living of alms would be noble and just, take donations but don't ask for a fee. So I truly feel the Sadhu bit is slightly overdone. To people in the West maybe a Sadhu flying all over the globe to give financed lectures etc. is normal...BUT this is not what it should be, this seems anti-sadhu. Unfortunately it is a trend that has begun recently, but that doesn't make it right and you may be able to name a dozen very famous spiritual leaders who engage in such activities, but they are all fakes, they might have some very solid teaching to impart and might be honest and true people who want to help humanity, but THEY ARE NOT SADHUS. A true Sadhu should have no identity, a wandering mendicant who only identifies with the one Supreme Brahman, one who shies away from publicity or fame, one who accepts no title save that of the Lord's servant. So to us who were born in the land of Sadhus this seems like a farce. You can take it or leave it, but this is just how it is and if you as an Indian truly believe that Gil is a Sadhu then not to be crass and in want of a better expression, you are just "ass licking". The Dalai Lama while being a spiritual head is also a political figure and has vested interests in requiring a fee. His people have lost their country and are extremely poor and all the money he gets is gifted towards his Cause and his people. I for one have never had to pay to listen to any of the Dalai's lectures in India. NO matter how much effort may be focused towards this Sadhu business and no matter how many people may truly believe that Gil is a Sadhu, and even if Gil believes in it himself, this is the biggest illusion. You may chant mantras for 20 years everyday all the time and truly believe that some effect is taking place, but no matter how sincere you maybe, effect of a mantra lies solely in the precision of the pronunciation, no matter how sincere one is, this precision unfortunately cannot be attained easily if one has not grown up in the land of mantras...and so it would never work...in the same way, no mater how strongly you or XYZ may believe that Gil is a Sadhu..he is not and never will be, he cannot be given the public life he leads, the amount of money he require to "recreate the tribal etc etc etc", the fact that he will not SHARE even a stage with other artists, even if he has a bloody good reason for this, a Sadhu never denies anyone and should in fact exalt in the event of being able to share such experiences with other people who want to play music as well...even if you can name a whole list of Gurus it doesn't change this fact. SO lets all relax on the Sadhu bit....he might be learned and may practice many aspects of hinduism and be well spoken on many theories and may do yoga and pray at the right times, but that doesn't make one a Sadhu.

Baba, we all have our own point of view and I completely respect that.
My point is if promoters around the world are ready to book him for a 24 hour set, Where is the problem? The question should be put to the promoters why they book him and promote his gatherings? or people who go listen to him play for 24 hours. The crew in Portland do a gathering every year with him. I have friends who drive for six hours to go listen to him and they go every year. Some people genuinely appreciate what he does. I go listen to him for his music as simple as that, rest what he does is entirely upto him.

NO Problem. I have great respect for the man, especially since he can pull off 24 hours of playing some insane music, and it's lovely that many people have a soul moving experience. Hats off to that...and also to the fact that he is a big part of this scene and was one of it's pioneers I'm merely refuting the Sadhu bit. If believing in this makes him happy and makes people happy then to each his own, don't want to rain on anyone's parade especially one that has good intentions at heart.

Well... i need not say more. You have it all right there. Well, firstly, I dint have the slightest clue abt u being Indian . If u are one, then u shld be knowing who a real Sadhu is. And inspite of being one, if u still consider Gil as a Sadhu, i think my friend u are completely disillusioned... or sucking up.
Well suddenly, u just change the subject like changing plates. So in the end after all this ... this isn't ur point? So i guess, we're all clear then .
