Why do so few artists bring CDs to sell?

I always hesitate to buy CDs because a lot of the artists I want to buy from live in the US and it doesn't make sense that I would buy their CD from japan or germany.

But then when they come play in san francisco, I ask and they have no CDs to sell!

If I were touring and playing many places I would definitely have a decent sized pack of CDs to sell at my shows. It just seems like good business sense.

yes i agree!
Well worth to have some copies with you and sell for a cheap buck, or even give away.

I tried selling.
A sale of 1-2 cd per gig just doesn't worth the bother.

Bringing CDs to the gig was how we did it in the early punk rock DIY days. Plus you get to meet and talk to the band/artist and form a connection. If psytrance artists did this, I'd be buying their music for sure, even if I wasn't blown away by their set, but just to support their efforts.

Not really.
Not sure about other countries, but it doesn't work like that in Israel.
If 1-2 cds are sold in a party, then they are bought by the only people who will buy the cds so next party it's 0.
On the other hand, Belgium kicks ass and cds sell there well.

This is why for Cronomi's next release I won't even bother to get a stock shipped Israel, the shipping fees and customs are not worth it.

if you're releasing a physical album on a label then i think it's very wise to get free copies or buy a stock from the label at bulk price so you can give away or sell some copies at the venues you play.

but

if you're releasing only via internet even if it's not a free release then i think it's atleast a financial risk for the artist to actually print cds. perhaps if you could get a deal like ektoplazm has (prints on demand) it could work. but then again it's the master cd (from which all the copies are made) that is the most expensive one.

maybe alexander could throw us some figures about how much it actually costs f.e. to print 10, 25, 50 or 100 copies so we all get a better picture of what's being discussed?

Most artists only get 1 or maybe a few more cd's from the label. so you don't really have any to sell unless you specifically ask and buy more cds from the label.
I tried it a few times and maybe sold 1 cd every now and then. So it doesnt really work very well.
Than again I heard that some artists do sell quite alot. But that is based on 3rd hand stories.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Its a never endings story to all the things the artists has to do to satisfy the audience who would not bother to buy the music even if it was only a cent per CD.           www.beatagency.dk

i never bring cd's with me if its not a europeen country, customs can bust your balls if they find them and you don't have working visa, they'll go to your myspace and check the gigs you got and shit, happend to a few guys i know...           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

So what do you do if someone comes after your gig and ask where they can get your music, ask for a Cd for example? IF you tell them they can buy it here and there, they wont, they want to do it right there and now, thats business for you. its acting in the right moment.

A funny thing would be to print some CDs your self, and have some colorful pens and make your own artwork on the fly and give away, haha.. that would be very personal! or ask for a little donation. not a big fee. or get a coffee or something else in return.

I wonder why artists should stay on the right side of the law but the others not.
Sometimes i think there is this underground scene and this overground scene colliding, where they release a lot of CDs and sell their rights to the music so they can only let record labels sell their music..

So its not this question about the music being free for the reason of money but for the reason of rights and bureaucracy...

most of the time we really dont own anything but the illusion of owning....

anyway not totally on topic maybe?

i almost dont have anymore copies from my releases got just about 100 from each and thats gone..
in australia and russia there is good supportive scene i managed to travel aus few months only playin doofs and selling cds (with lots of help from dear friends too) and trips to moscow always been worth the bother of getting cds all the way there (remember its quite a big box to get 50 cds with you on airport along with equipment and cloth etc.)

well the new releases are on ektoplazm anyway so they just have to follow the links          www.sattelbattle.com

honestly its just pocket change money anyway, plus if i end up in a party with money i will eventually spend it on some bullshit anyway.

cd in trance is dead anyway, if ever one day i work on another album i would never release it on cd too much work for little return.           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:
