it s easy to bring too much audible inter modulation distortion down there with compressor something to be carrefful when compressing sounds with low,specially sine like kick tails it could sound weird very fast..so many release have weird distortion down there...when i check my analog chain i often use a sine to be sure i don t saturate too much with too fast release ..on saw like when making a bassline or a full mix it can be harder to spot..it s inharmonic distortion so not welcom usually.. but some good saturation down there can bring some love, like transformers in analog gears |

First of all focus only with your vst synth to make the sound nice without any fx. if you done with it and you feel that sounds good go next for the fx if you want.
The bass that you will make if isnt good any of the fx that are around wouldnt make it better, from the other side if you make a nice bass the fx will help you to give a taste to your bass.
Also do a search here im sure you will find many many many useful things
