sometimes it depends on what artist you were mentioned           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

correct me if im wrong, but isn't this usually a technique for dj's and not artists?
a dj listing names of artists they have played with on parties might mean something about promoting their events company or their events production skills, cross-referencing genre identity or the kinds of sounds they like to play with.
for a dj, who is not promoting their own music, it can be a good way to say "i played on big parties before including ones with xxx artist" so that other party organizers know this dj can be booked for big parties etc...

^^ i am not speaking about colaborations, that is very well accepted, and it is a good promotion..but if you read carefully i speak about: "they advertise that they played" - so my idea, why to make reference to artists you had no real contact besides of playing in the same party?

does that define something?

ahhhhhhhhhhh, sorry, now i see what you mean.
yah i guess its a bit strange...

it is hard to say if a dj isn´t an artist, and a producer is an artist..i think both are artists each in their own way.this is a phenomenon used by producers and dj´s.
i see where they are trying to reach with advertising other artists they have been in partiesd, but this doesn´t tells nothing about them..

for example, a dj could say he played in the same party has KDD, and his music style is progressive..
but usually they identify with artists ho play the same musical taste.

I personally like it because it tells the style that the artist plays and like to associate him/herself with.

"John plays the most funky, psychedelic, slow, but at times fast, crazy, wonderful beats. S/He has grown this scene since 94 when s/he was playing in Goa. etc."

What type of style does s/he play? I mean it sounds good, but when read the line up and bio for an artist I don't know and have never heard. it helps to hear.

"s/he's played with Kindzadza, Cosmo, Arsenic, Rawar and Highko."

now I've got a pretty good idea of what style s/he plays and now I know that I'm probably interested in seeing him/her

but it doesn't mean that they're going to be good, either.

hehe in that case... i guess it's just the club scene kinda thing if the promoter thinks you're good enough to play alongside of those artists, then in some respects I feel like it does make sense to list them. this really goes for parties though than a festival, because an artist who is playing for the first time could be put on the small stage where no one is going to be, as opposed to a one room party.

but there's no way to tell the difference whether they played right after them.. so I just really lost the point of what I was trying to say and proved myself wrong in the process hahahahahaha

but it would be nice to use artists in the same style so people have an idea of what style you play when the description is ambiguous.

good input though I have seen that before haha

It's like "i shared space with Bradd Pitt" (talking with respect to a Hollywood buff)

feels good to them maybe!

i don't see anything wrong with listing some of the people you shared line-ups with....

it kind of gives an idea of what that dj plays....because they will only list artists relevant to the music they play and parties they want to play at, else it is just boasting which is stupid

i do it myself and got some people hooked on the music those artists play, there really are people who ask more info about them. It's a win win situation for both dj as artist since there aren't much people that are interested in the music played at psytrance parties.

I've been the opening DJ at a lot of parties with almost every headliner that's come through LA, but I'm not going to list them all in my bio.
Not to mention if I'm opening, or playing at a dark hour, I'm not going to be playing the same style as the headliner who's playing at sunrise, so the music style reference is pointless.

(edited after reading razz's post, cos I like razz )
