why do most artists when promote themselves, they advertise that they played with artist x, or with artist y?
does that makes them good artists/djs?

Old raver habits?
Somewhere, sometime people must have started assuming that if you played at the same show as a big name, it gave you street credit/other people thought you were good too.
I always see it being far more applicable in the club scene where it would actually speak higher of the dj if they had opened for a big name dj (showing that the club thinks they are worthy of this).

lack of something personal. And wack or funny.Musiciansc music sounds for itself that has to be enuff. No need to involve others to promote oneself or ?? well thast usual as the avarage is usual also.
And that tells about one also someting.
Apart from this it tells absolutely 100% nothing ,that one is better cause he played with some more known artists.Maybe its an indication that one is really a noob but he has the possibility to be on the same flyer or party as someone good , when he has the needs to show off anything unown. https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden |

Technically they will never be better.
But as promotion: its one of the best methods to highlight your name.
Imagine you play your music in the same place where Madona appears….
everyone will wonder: who is that dj?...
It works… despite its ugly way.

i use other artists name in my biography too.
not ones i had the plesure to share stage with (it would be too long anyway), but ones that i have actualy worked with or remixed their music etc.
is it only promotional thing? not really.. its info about the project.. that have some promo value in it.. it does show something of your quality i reken , anyhow im very proud in the artists i worked with and i think its great way to show it to mention their names with respect. also some of them i looked up to in the past so its kind of extreme cool to make track with one of your favorite artists..

yeah its totaly sth different to work with some musicians than only to share some stage on different times without maybe even knowing the others..
Of course.Know what you mean,Im also very "proud'" or glad to worked with them I like in my musical life.
even those are hard to remember all though.Know what you mean Elad ,its absolutely kool to mentinon some musical brothers or sisters.

1.First of all i think its overrated, not MOST artists do this, yet it's been seen....
2.Well... i do this "promotion" and some people asked me WHY?
The answers are many, one of the major being my lack of memory, its a kind of note-to-self list.
Also it serves as a kind of promotion, both for myself (so that people reading my profile gets the idea that im actually a part of something) but perhaps also for friends and the people in the list - so readers get the sensation they are cool dudes since they got their name there
3.Does it make them/me good artists ? Depends on your taste, some even refuse to call it art (fuck yeah, even some of the stuff in my list i dont consider nothing but a fart in a can).

^^ i am not speaking about colaborations, that is very well accepted, and it is a good promotion..but if you read carefully i speak about: "they advertise that they played" - so my idea, why to make reference to artists you had no real contact besides of playing in the same party?
does that define something?

Yeah to some extend it does, if you are to understand anything about the artist thru words, then it can be a way of saying "It's along these lines" or "People who booked this also booked that" or even "This artist played several parties including some that had these names".
So yeah i think it defines quite a deal.
Did you not like my first answers ?
Is it less accepted to do this ? www.parvati-records.com |

For most uses, it's promotion, but it always looks to me like just showing off. Name dropping.
To me it's a turn off when a DJ does this. Cheap and shallow and I think less of the DJ.
