Well.. If he used 3/4 instead of 4/4, then its actually not 223bpm, but 3/4 of that value.. wich equals 167bpm.. Or am I wrong? :S
About the topic, i recently had trouble puting 2 tracks in a sequence... Altough they were both 148bpm, just the percussion and kind of groove of one another, gave the sense of less Bpm to one of the tracks. |

my latest track is at 145 and sounds brutally faster than those i was making at 148...
guess it really is all about the instruments used...
also, i'm doing the bass in A... if i drop to G it sounds slower again... cool, aint it?
is it all in my head or do you people notice the same ?

there are two thing i think that dictate a track speed...and i dont mean the bpm here...
your bassline and your hat work
if you have a really layered hatline , or runnign hatline it will sound fast no matter the bpm(talking average bpms here), also how many bass notes you put between your kicks....
i once made a track of 155bpm, yet it doesnt sound like it is 155bpm,l thats because my bassline wasnt "running" so to speak....
just experiment with high energy hat -lines especially and you can create some sweet psycho-acoustic effects.

it's normal... higher pitch means (or looks like) faster. check tickets - the toy track he uses that effect. and most tracks with low-pitched basslines sound slow. try playing with the bassline notes (lenght and pitch), adding good percursion line (this is essential for full on... open hi hats, many closed hi hats and snares at least), play with attack and release of the compressors, shorten samples... bla bla bla

i noticed that song structure does wonders too... U might have a 16-bar part that sounds very fast, but if u integrate it badly u'll 'slow it down' because of the buildup to the part (or the lack of buildup). If the buildup is really good u'll make it sound even 'faster' then it already was on it's own... and 16ths are great for it too, but not only in percussion and bass... A constant white noise drone with a gate that makes it stutter on 16ths tempo and an automated filter will greatly enhance the sence of speed (example).
and tnx for the tips! |
