Is there anyone here who knows Jaron Lanier or anyone who has seen him personally anywhere playing or talking at events ?

For those who never heard: Jaron is one of the brightest computer scientists (software developers) worldwide, an industry leader in Silicon Valley, famous for pioneering virtual reality. But he is also a musician playing literally hundreds of different ancient instruments.

In his newest work "Who owns the future" he critises the central computers, the siren servers i.e. facebook, google, amazon etc in a deeply humane and challenging way. Recommendable to anyone who lives with the idea that facebook IS the internet. Finally someone who understands people who did not open their facebook account for years and who would like to see reavival of older digital values:D

"If you design machines for the sake of making sort of an ascendant global brain, it's natural enough that all glory goes to the central computer, and people don't get paid for what they contribute to, because you don't value people. And the more you pursue that dream, the less people will be advantaged in that system...and oh, by the way, the people who run those big central brains that are supposed to be autonomous, they are the richest people in the world."

Oh and btw, not only musicians will be the losers of the digital reavolution - according to Lanier, and this guy really knows what economy means and how it works, many others will come in the next decades. You want to be a part of this future? Then just close this window , go ahead, open your facebook account and start doing dayly content for the bee queen.

And an interview with the the digital pioneer who became a web rebel:

You probably wonder what this has to do with trance?
And I wonder, what the 1 000 000 trance fans in facebook have to do with it either.

And btw at some point of his book, he takes a personal note about the musical forums he used to love which are practically gone into the facebook hype and not existent any more, at least not the way it used to be. In his latest interview regarding the peace prize of the German book fair he said that he has no accounts in social media either. Well, at least he has time to work a lot and to write books.

Nice read Moki, thanks. It's interesting how his points of view have changed over the years, he promoted piracy of music in 1999 but went back on it in 2007 when he saw how the industry was changing.

1999:

This is true. But it is also very typical for the best software developers, backend developers or hardware engineers that I have met or worked with too. If you were the first the invent virtual reality worldwide, would it be of any interest for you to write html and css for website frontend, which is not even a programming language but a describing markup and would it be of any challenge to you to throw and copy one of million frontend website frames just to present yourself and put some fotos and links to tracks? I guess, not at all. Guys like him have much more projects in their mailbox than they would ever be able to finish in their lifetime, they do not need to look for new clients or to sell their profile to anyone, because anyone knows them....

And at the end of the day, he really does not like the idea of web 2.0 with all the fotos and likes and profiles and selfies ...( he went from web 1.0 to web 3.0 without a stop between). Why would someone need a self presentation on the internet if he truely believes that technology is there to help society to other things?
