I played with FL Studio for 7 years. It's where I learned a lot of my production techniques, and I believe it's as they say: "It's the fastest route from your brain to the speakers."
The sound engine has improved quite a bit, now competing with the other major DAWs, and it has some very unique functionalities that you can't find anywhere else: for example the "link to controller" functionality (which I terribly miss ), the piano roll and even the step sequencer, and FL makes some kick ass plugins.
But in the last 2 years I've changed my whole setup to Ableton (especially for the live part). FL has an exponential learning curve: in the beginning the first thing you do when you install the program and open it is a beat. You just click on the grey squares, press play and music starts coming out immediately. But over time it get's difficult to advance past a certain point in your track, and you end up with many unfinished projects.
In Ableton the learning curve it logarithmic, so it starts out hard but gets easier over the way (I also already had 7 years of knowledge about production, I had just to adapt to the new DAW. If I were to learn from the beginning by my self it could become very difficult to advance), but with Ableton I have learned a ton of a lot more about sound engineering, thanks to it's way of plug-ins (instead of having a mega complete VST that does almost everything, it's the other way around: every native plugin it just a small and extremely powerful module for you to manipulate), and it also lets my make my music without pressing pause, and with equipment like the APC you have total control over the playing track.
IMHO Cubase looses to these arguments: it's level of difficulty start's out really high so anyone without help is basically screwed. It's great to record tracks and make products but not so great to play music on.
FL Studio has some great functionalities that I'd love to see in the other DAWs, but after a while everything is all over the place and it's hard to keep the track controlled and to get the big picture of things while having power over really small details because it doesn't fit quite together (just think about the "edit event" window...).
But in the end it's like everything else: there isn't the best of anything. It's a great DAW with it's pros and cons and can really compete with the other mainstream DAWs out there. It's all a matter of choice, personal likes and the willingness to make some sacrifices for functionalities to get the specific advantages of your favorite DAW.
It can't hurt you to know more.. Knowledge is power!

I'm also using FL Studio, been using it for some months now and I like it. tried out ableton but I didn't understand anything of it so I guess I'll stick with this for a while.
It'd be cool if people could give some production advices for FL since I'm a noob : ) The idea of a wiki-type site would be kinda awesome and I'd totally be up to it. I could actually host the site and try to run it but I'd need help definitelly. Anyone intereted? |

FL is excellent. Theres pros and cons with all daws it just depends on which production techniques you use the most and which features you exploit the most. I agree though when its said that FL is the easiest to use however the reason most people think that it is "amateur" is because a lot of the cooler features are hidden or are a really really tiny button.

yeah the very second i started the first posted track i made a bet to myself and said "hey, I BET YOU A HUNDRED BUX ITS FRUITY LOOPS WITH A BUNCH OF TWEAKED PRESETS FROM SYNTHS LIKE SYLENTH AND MAYBE RENEGADE.. PROBABLY NEXUS AS WELL - ok deal"
i lost a 100 dollars now and also won an equal amount, god i love the company of myself, PRAISE JESUS.
anyway, fl sounds like shit, and people using fl are a bunch of shits as well.
you can in a sense compare it to fucking a large girl or even, wait for it, a WOMAN. really, why would one want to do that?
sir, uninstall that shit immediately and switch over to something less dance e-jay, which by the way is for kids and people with down's syndrome, and your music shall arise from the very shit pit that FL is.
oh and you'd probably want to uninstall your overrated, shitty VST's along with FL as well and start learning atleast some fundamentals about basic synthesisis, if you are not a complete retard like most of the FL users, that is.
cheers! |
