Anyone wanna share his experience? I'm about to format my hd and don't know if i should keep XP or go 7... do you think it would be the right choice for an audio PC? Thanks. |

I moved to Windows 7 approximately 6 weeks ago.
Cubase 5
4GB Ram
Core2Quad 9450
UAD DSP 1 & 2 Cards
Vertex SSD
Virus TI
Echo Layla PCIe
Bit of a cutting edge setup in terms of hardware and software so I was a bit aprehensive, but it was 'that time' again where a format is inevitable, so I went for Win7.
I must say, I've not had a single problem with either software not running, drivers not working or crashes. Just the usual Cubase 5 instability (I'm come to the conclusion, as much as I love the sound of Reverence, it is utter shit and has caused 99% of my projects to stop opening completely even after sitting untouched as an insert)
In fact - Now I hear that there is a 64bit version of the Virus TI software and I've been so pleased with Windows 7, I am about to install the 64bit version of the OS tomorrow and shove in a bucket load more RAM.

YO,
Using W7 64bit
Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 720QM (1.60Ghz, 6MB L3 cache)
4Gb Ram
Cubase 5 64 bit
All Spectrasonics 64 bit
All Native Instruments (Komplete 6) 64bit
MPK49
Novation SLMK2
Launchpad
No problems whatsoever, flies straight and rock solid (apart from VSTBridge from Steinberg so use JBridge for other non 64bit vsts)
Sweet machine although yet to be really tested but so far so good

There is still some plug-ins and what not that has not gone 64bit ...
64 bit is going to be the future so its worth the switch but it might make you shed some plugins...
Untill they upgade there code.
W7 has prooved to be more stable and just all around better than vista so dont be scared just be ready.

I have read about some "wraper" plug ins ( http://jstuff.wordpress.com ) that make it so you can still run 32 bit plugs in a 64, or a 64 in a 32 or even a 32 to a 32 bit os so you can use more than 3 gigs of ram in 32bit os so it say's.
I say waiting another year for 64 bit is the safe way to go but you'll have to make the switch eventualy so some might want to start now.
