I have very little history in the scene, but it seems to me that penta is just breaking into "big name artist" status. Atomic Pulse would already be there, and on the next level would be IM, Simon Posford, and GMS.

to me big name artists are ones who pull in a crowd just by their name. hence the phraze big name no?
i think cpu fits the category because he has a following after his name and is associated with the word quality.
for example (regardless of taste) when i say gms - u already know that there will be alot of people who will come even if they didnt hear gms lately, this is due to that reason. usually big named artists have already come out with an album or 2, but lets not mix it up and think that everyone who came out with and album or 2 is a big name it also depends on the label they are part of, the prestige associated with it, amount of bookings per year/month and fees. i think at the end of the day the big names keep the crowd moving the crowd and generate revenue for the parties involved.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

"Big name artist" = an artist who has released two or more full length albums, traveled extensively around the world performing, released tracks on three or more different labels (at least one of these being a well known established psytrance label)....

but that's "big name" if we're talking successful and well known throughout the psytrance world...

there's also "big name" in the mainstream sense of the word...but I guess that fits more into Skeeve's 'on the next level' category.....

...just my thoughts...           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

I agree with what is being said so far, and lay out the following definition as well:

Big name artists have a following that exists independent of any one live show, or any one album, etc... so they can release a few bad tracks and do some bad shows and still draw people. I think of big name artists as people whose rep has grown into something with an existence almost independent of their current performance.

According to me, BIG NAME artists are those who have made an image for themselves over the years as being ""crowd movers and entertainers..""

They have a way of making sure that majority of the people that have come to see them are impressed with them. This is essentially the reason that they bring in people wherever they go with "word of mouth" advertising working for them.

The cons to this popularity is that they are on the expensive of the spectrum with regards to Booking fees . The quality of the music is always up for speculation in case of any artist.

i think 'big' name depends on the scene you're trying to appeal to..

Nobody in Denver will know who CPU is.. Astrix is barely known. some have heard of Astral Projection and Hallucinogen, and a few more know about Infected Mushroom. Shpongle is relatively well known also.

then there's psytrance-specific 'celebrities' like Hujaboy, CPU, Penta, etc. that few outside of psytrance universe will recognize.

if you talk about BIG names, though, remember that even relatively niche EDM artists like Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim are HUGE compared to Infected Mushroom.

"Big Name" artists would be people who travel the world to play at parties most of their time. Other artists also play lots of gigs but they do local, regional or continental.

Yeah, some of the big dudes out there would be GMS, Skazi, Astrix, Sun Project, Talamasca. Heard some of them are gonna start playing at intergalactic festivals

Saw Midi Miliz at an intergalactic festival recently.
Btw, I would say that these dudes are also pretty "big name" (relative to psytrance of course).           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

agree with all teh posts.. so far.. Big name artists pull in a pretty big crowd just with the name.. mostly coz their names are synonymous with good music (atleast in the past).. not that it is always the fact..
iodeally, a big name artist is some one who came out with couple of good albums.. have beenb around for a while in the world scene.. played in some of the bigger festuivals around the world.. atleast thats what i think..
GMS, IM, .. n am nt talkin of the music.. just the names which will pull in a big crowd.. n is widely known..
