Just wondering who all is producing music right now. This is mostly for the non-labeled of us. I know pretty much everyone who djs in north america, but was curious to see who is also producing and where they're from.
I've been at it for about 5 months out here in Iowa . Been making various versions of psytrance as well as chill.

I was "producing music right now" just a second ago, but I had to stop to make some tea.
been making "bastard" trance music since 2000,
"shapestatic" with kri since 2005,
and also doing a new techno project "piltdown sound" since last year
got some odd IDMish/glitchy electro beats/drones laying around the HD too...

My first (somewhat long awaited) productions should be ready for ears soon.
I've been working as much as I can on LEARNING music production for the past year or so on and off.
Lately things have really taken off. I finally picked up Cubase, while I had been using Ableton before (which I still thing is a great piece of software). Despite the naysayers, there really IS a difference in render quality between Ableton and other DAW's such as Cubase and Logic. Case to point, my move to Cubase has allowed my works to shine brighter in sound quality.
I've worked in a few different styles. My main objective at this point is more FULL-ON sounding Trance. Although I have worked on some Techno/Progressive, as well as some "Early Morning/Twilight Psytrance" (not really Full-On at all).
Expect my first few tracks this Summer.

Does being "from" North America count?

I record in cubase too, but i think the main difference in mix/render quality comes from the steinberg GUI ;-)
nowadays couldn't imagine not having ableton on the laptop making sounds to record into cubase on the desktop....
Gotta shout out to BABAR , though he probably isn't posting on or reading isratrance... he's been making tunes with me and on his own since the beginning ;-)
too bad they've never gotten released/finished....

I have a MUCH easier time making neat MIDI loops and effects chains in Ableton than Cubase.
However, I really don't like arranging large things from scratch in Ableton.
I like to export my MIDI loops into Cubase from Ableton, where I feel I can arrange and mix in a much finer detail in Cubase. In short, for me Cubase is much better for production, and Ableton is much better for performance. Maybe that's because of my knowledge base with both programs. I couldn't imagine being able to pull off a live set in Cubase any more than I can imagine being able to pull off arrangements beyond a few bars of single sounds from scratch in Ableton.
Apples and oranges.
Alex, how do you have that setup hooked up? Audio from laptop running into desktop? I'm curious.

I worked with Ableton exclusively for quite awhile. The work flow is great, and actually is quite nice for production. You can use it just like you use any DAW in the arrangement view, OR use it for its strengths by using both the arrangement and session together.
But the real problem is that unless you render out in another piece of software it just doesn't sound as good. This is not a scientific test I did. Quite frankly, renders coming from the same plugins, with very similar EQ are coming out NIGHT AND DAY better in Cubase. There is something up with how Ableton renders low notes especially it seems.
The best way in the industry right now to "utilize" Ableton for production has been to render out through Pro Tools, Cubase, or Logic. But the inherent problem with this is that you CANNOT use any plugins in Ableton while you do this. One preferred method is running the VST out of Logic/Cubase into ableton for processing, and then back out into Cubase/Logic. But in my opinion, this is really adding way too much overhead to the work flow; hence nullifying any benefit you might have gained from using Ableton in the first place.
BastardSamadhi had probably the best idea I've heard so far, using Ableton on a separate computer altogether, thus giving you access to plugins and everything, and simply routing the audio into another system via hardware.
Honestly though, it still seems like too much work.
I think that once Ableton's rendering engine becomes competitively up to speed, it might be the best option for production. It still needs a bit of help in organization in the sequencer view; but the actual production of sounds is incredible.
But for those of you who have successfully integrated Ableton into your production routine with programs such as Cubase and Logic; I'd be curious to hear how you are using it. What types of sounds do you find Ableton to be especially useful for?

Naiad Daiad is humming right along, thanks for asking.
I also make dub (not psydub, reggae dub) as OpenSourceCode
and then there's a whole folder full of spastic neuro-psy that will most likely never see the light of day.
(also, i hear ableton 8 has pretty much wrapped up the rendering problem. got a bunch of old tracks to re-bounce!)
