Who else uses Renoise?

Just curious who else uses Renoise besides me

I used trackers off and on, not serious, starting in 98 I think, maybe 97 idk. Just messing around with Impulse, nothing close to an idea what I wanted to create... Then in 03 I picked up ModPlug to see if I could get into tracking again, with a bit more determination this time. Used that til I discovered Renoise, i think it was version 1.3. It was like christmas, the interface I was used to with the capabilities of modern DAW production! I was intimidated about learning more common DAWs while using ModPlug. Cubase and the like have a different work flow, something that every time I tried it out I found myself wishing I could just drag/drop or shift+arrows to copy-paste, wishing I could just enter the note values right where I want them RIGHT NOW...

There's only one thing Renoise can't do; if you want to, say, mix down stem tracks in Renoise, you have to manually set the length of the track, whereas with Live, you can drag/drop into clip view and bam, length set. So Ive been using Live for final mixing down, only because I can, and would rather do that than set the length manually. Also, say I have an xrns with the stems all mixed down... but I want to preview 3 mins in... Well... Renoise only recognizes the start of the WAVs in each track, starting the track or FFwding it in the middle isnt possible... YET...

Renoise feels like something, idk, communal. Registered users get to vote for new features in new versions, which really helps it feel like 'we're not just paying some super rich Germans from Steinberg tons of money, we're paying 50 euro to another German (I think he is..) for a fine, modern DAW that is closing the difference between it and other, higher priced programs each time it goes thru a significant update, which we the people chose. That makes it feel a little more personal than something out of a box from a store that costs considerably more than 50 euro. That, and my name front and center on the loading splash (I used the demo for a long while before finally registering, so it was a moment to celebrate when i first saw my name )

Some nice looking new things on this version. Someday soon Renoise will mutate into a hybrid of Cubase (everyone wants a piano roll eventually), Live (Pattern Matrix and Duplex), and FastTrackerII Im sure they'll think of some way to integrate clip view style tracks with the classic machine-code tracks...

Im sorry, I just really enjoy using Renoise, and am glad that it exists. My workflow is smooth and quick, there is absolutely nothing to complain about sound wise...

I havent really hung out on its forum very much so i dont know how many use it for psytrance. So I made this thread for Renoise psychedelia.

Appreciate, share love, tips, tricks, ideas, spam, milkshakes, proper nouns, cricket bats, staves, pentacles, but please no testicles.           .

i like to use it to make experimental music and having fun but what i would really like is to build a psytrance live act around renoise , it s great for that,i find it amazing cause even watching the screen can be so psychedlic when you change the gui colors.. and it have great fonctions for making a real live set, i love how you can interact, it need some work first to set it up but you can change your live depending of the reaction of the crowd making every live you do unic, also it s super stable and never crash, timing are fucking tight...and just think to everyone thrilled wondering wtf you re doing .

Im working on a live set rewiring Renoise into Live as the bass/kick/various percussion box. Ive got a ton of loops and full tracks of mine and others (not just psytrance) all in the same set. Its fun to play around with, still getting a handle on exactly what I want to be doing with it. Ive seen videos of Renoise used to jam live with (using pre-sequenced material) that blew my mind... Not exactly the kind of live that you'd want from a psytrance set though.

i have no idea yet too ,do u know you can use multiple instance of renoise at same time? it open even more possibilities but might be a bit complex to setup .

for live i was thinking just to cut tracks into patterns and then rearrange during live act ,maybe trigering some sounds in these patterns manualy ... but there is a lot more possibilties i have to check .

ive seen videos of people using multiple instances, but i havent tried it out myself, seems kind of intimidating... I read about one person who uses Renoise live, I guess using 2 instances, trading back and forth (without syncing them) btwn them. Each file was smth like 320mb of loops and patterns, so lots of pre-recording. Im trying to see just how much on-the-fly writing/seq'ing i can manage... But still just finding the best way to work, streamlining the midi and keyboard mappings...

Hello Mudpeople,
Funny you've just started this thread as I was going to ask around if anybody uses Renoise. Back in the days I was fond of tracker music. I've downloaded the demo and I must say it sounds really nice. One of my favorite drum and bass producer uses it (it's ASC : http://theasc.blogspot.com/).

What are the main benefits of Renoise vs other DAW according to you ?

Thanks.

I got started using Impulse tracker in the late 90s so I was used to the tracker layout already... AND...

Its price is nice.

And the layout of the interface lets me write a lot quicker, whihc means i can get ideas out before I lose sight of what I wanted to lay down. Its basically MS Excel for music Other more common DAWs could take a lesson from the quick-write tracker layout, sometimes I just want just that ONE sound RIGHT THERE, instead of having to write it out on a piano roll or record live playing I just press a key on the proper place in the pattern view...           .

yesterday I watched this video..
which is anounced on dubstepforum as a skrillex tutorial.. it doesn't look like so... but whatever.

it sounds really good, nice sound engine, good features... but making vertical beats is not for me

hi!
I'm a renoise user too!
I also like live very much so..
I would like to try this: renoise as rewire master and live 7 as slave. This way I could integrate the elastic audio of live into renoise, playing live audio clips inside renoise (I don't know if this is possible, I'll have to try!)

bye!!

btw: renoise 2.6 has scripting, this is a huge feature! u can do everything with it!!

yeah I downloaded the demo yesterday,I need a bit time to feel the old vibe than I upgrade.
Old vibe - I played on fast tracker or pro tracker was the name I think - some 2 decades ago.
We was freaks in it.But its been a long time. What I can remember is that the tracker and the nowadays usual sequencers are two worlds.
I hope I'll catch that old vibe soon.Should be a fast fun.
